Hey all,

I just bought a used Axis Sport online today and am now counting the hours until delivery. I like my LIII so much I had to have an Axis to go with it and I couldn't pass up the price I negotiated with the seller.

In the mean time I'd like some opinions on what to do when I get it (other than play it ;) ). As you may be able to see in the pic it's got some wear on the body (chips on the forearm area and the lower horn) so I'm trying to decide on whether I should get it refinished or leave it alone and change the pickguard to black (I really don't like the clear one).

Here's my thoughts on a refin. If I go this route I was thinking of changing the color to Tangerine Pearl with a black guard or possible filling in the screw holes and not using a guard at all. The original color with a black guard would be kind of Tele-like which is cool but I've always loved EBMM's Tangerine pearl and I figure this guitar is a great candidate for a paint job.

What do you guys (and gals) think? I'm really interested in your opinions. axissport.jpg

Congrats on the Axis. I think that you should make this thread a poll.

1. leave it as is.
2. repaint it tangerine pearl.
3. refinish it in a transparent color.

I threw option #3 in there since the body is a nice piece of wood. I vote for #3.

Good idea. Can I edit this to make it a poll?

I'd leave it- that's pretty sweet, wear and all.

This^^^

It's stunning as is... I wouldn't cover up that grain and the clear p/g is very cool. If the chips have any rough edges, I'd smooth them off and rock that beauty. Any new scars will just add to the patina.
Why spend the time, effort and $$$ to refinish it just so that you can worry about that first scratch/dent (which WILL happen...)???

Just my opinion. It's your guitar, do what makes you happy...

I do like the wood grain and don't mind some dings but the forearm one is pretty bad. If if weren't for this one I probably wouldn't touch it. Here's a close up.

I've certainly seen worse. You could always use a dab of clear nail polish to protect it and smooth it over. Looks like it's seen some solid wear, which is great.

I would add a black pickguard indeed. As for the body, i would leave it. A refinish is pretty expensive and on this kind of finish a few marks only make it look cooler. And you want have to worry about really using it and damaging it.

The grain is so beautiful!!!
Have it professionally stripped to natural with the clear pickguard.
It will be stunning!

I guess I can look at it as I saved a few thousand on a relic job. ;) Any recommendations on where to get a black guard other than pick guard heaven? Looks like they have a pretty long lead time.

Leave it trans gold and add a black pick guard. Will look killer with the zebra buckers! I love my Axis sport!

Thanks to Ozzy for sending me pics and info on the work Pat did on his EVH. Beautiful job. I think you gentlemen have me convinced to keep the original color (or refin to natural) and do the black guard. I'm ordering the guard this morning and I think I'm just going to play it a bit and when I'm ready it will go out for a refinish. UPS shows a Tuesday delivery.. can't wait.
Thanks everyone for your input.
