Inconsistent Pearl Redburst Finishes?

I'm looking into purchasing ANOTHER ebjpm and this is what I'd like to get my hands on. This is listed as Pearl Redburst on JohnPetrucci.com.

The problem is that I haven't seen too many others out there with the Pearl Redburst finish that look like the guitar above. Would you say the pic above is an accurate representation of what I could expect when placing an order? Is there a vast difference in the way these get sprayed? I'd hate to put in an order and get something other than what I was expecting.

Well, I actually took that photo and it's from the very first NAMM where they were introduced (winter '01 I believe). So I'm not sure if Pearl Redburst has changed a little bit since then. Perhaps somebody at EB can attest to that. But I will say that I don't think my photos were that great and I cannot remember if they really accurately reproduced how those guitars appeared then.

I've noticed that most of the PRBs that I've seen (mine included) are VERY dark on the outside...almost black, some of the newer ones have a hint of plum to the red portion...

mine's like that..very dark on the permeter...also very reactive to viewing angles and lighting....love it! sometimes it looks blood red, other times black....PRB rules!

I dont believe that the finishes are inconsistant, I think that with all of the different digital cameras coupled with lighting you can get a white bass to look ten different colors.

Pearl Redburst is a hard color to photograph. The look varies a LOT depending on the lighting. I took some photos of my Pearl Redburst JP6 outside in natural light recently.. I'll dig around and post one or two here.

This is very true and I didn't rule that aspect out. The first pic up there seems much different than the usual though. It appears to be more of a dark cherry than a burst. It also appears to lack the black outer rim OC mentioned, which is pretty prevalent and a lot of them.

Inconsistent? I don't think so. Subtle variations depending on how the different coats are applied on a particular day? Possibly. I've noticed a variation in the Morse Blueburst. Some are darker than others. I've also noticed different shades of purple on the new Y2D's. It's done by humans not a machine. You'll have slight variations. It's all good.

Rush trust me, when that guitar arrives and you open the lid for the first time... You won't be disappointed. I had everyone in the store oohing and aahing for 10 minutes when mine arrived.

When I've seen PRB photos, they look pretty consistent to me, based on having seen the finish in various lighting situations. If I didn't have the actual experience to draw from though, I can see how you might think otherwise due to it's shifting nature.

One thing for sure.. every time I open the case and someone beholds that guitar for the 1st time, they ooh and aah over the finish. Never fails.

Well not that I've got that out of the way I have to decide on which red to go with. Radiance, Redburst or Candy.

It would be great to see a Pearl BrownBurst color option one day.

I'd say, how bright to you like your red?

Retina burn? Radiance Red

Touch 'o burgundy? Pearl Redburst

Also-ran? Candy red

Radience Red wasn't available when I bought mine, but I chose the PRB simply due to the fact that it wasn't available on any of the other guitars. The Mystic Dream really didn't do much for me.

Although now that it seems like there are thousands of them out there and it may not be so unique anymore, but it still is to me.

Go with the one that first caught your eye, you'll get the right one.

This would be a great color on the Petrucci. One that looked like the Rosewood Axis would be nice too. I made a few different colors out of Steve's image and this is one of them. I threw them in the gallery in a new folder called 'Custom Colors' if you want to have a look.
