Ah, the joke so lame, I had to use it twice. :D

I recently installed a Bass Mute on Moby, and as a result, the pickguard won't fit without a slight modification. so, for the time being, I have started to call him simply "The Egg."

This device is really cool. With the other tonal options available on the Bongo, the Mute sends it over the top. With two levels of muting available, I can do many things to the tone. I have already found an extremely convincing Hofner sound when played with a pick. The Egg currently has Sadowsky flats, and I have found a really nice upright-y tone, too.

Here's Moby, aka The Egg, with my most recent acquisition:

Suddenly, that Bongo doesn't look so goofy, does it, Naysayers?

 :D :D :D

Keep it that way!! It looks sooo schweet. Too bad EBMM stopped making the white finish on Bongos, else it would've been my next one, hands down! :D

That mute thingy is pretty cool! Hm... *schemes evil schemes*
Edit: Hm... It's a bit pricey... Can you hook a brutha up? ;)

I must say I'm not quite a fan of the naked bongo look. Something about the traditional MM pickguard that I always loved - and I miss it. You guys just can't stop messin with your basses, can you? You're all so obsessed. Bass, bass, bass, Bongo, Bongo, Bongo....

My new one is getting sent back for some minor repairs today. Thank god I've got my other one to keep me occupied till the 5 string returns.

I have to say that I agree with you. I think Moby looks decent in his current config, but I prefer the look of the bass with a pickguard. I will have to modify one of them to allow for the BassMute, though, because this thing is too cool to take off.

I'm starting to do some loop stuff, and having this many options at the flick of a switch really lets me layer a bunch of different textures as opposed to mush.

And, as far as messin with basses, new pickguards are a lot cheaper than new basses. I'm just doing the best I can to avoid GAS. Baby steps, Joe. Baby steps.

I like both white and black Bongos without pickguards. I wasn't crazy about the way my Desert Gold looked without one, but that white looks great.

Reckon I'll skip the bass mute and stick with my folded up (EB) polish cloth for NOAS (neckonastick), given the cost and so on. I don't ever need to turn it off.

Looks nice, Jason - very nice.

The Desert Gold basses without pickguards look like the juiciest orange in the entire world, and therein lies the problem.

I like the white sans pickguard (like it more with the steel screws instead of the black ones it came with), but I don't really like the screws look. Maybe I'll get a clear pickguard for it so I don't have to cut any of the more expensive ones that I have here. Hmmm....

My recommendation for a mute for NOAS is a piece of a mouse pad cut to desired thump shoved right up against the bridge. It should look a little better than a polish cloth (BTW--how do you know the cloth is Polish?), and it will probably work a little better, too, as I don't think it'll throw your intonation off as badly.

Of course, considering what you say about your history with fretless, I don't think you need any more help with bad intonation. :D I bet you'll find the NOAS is easier to grasp than a normal fretless, though. It's amazing what having the bass at a consistant height/angle will do for muscle memory as opposed to the constant shifting of a worn bass.

Heh---I thought it looked like they were two amoebas waving at each other.

How about the Tic Tac instead of the Cert?

I do have to say, though that I think Egg is appropriate considering that it looks like this when you hard boil it:

How does that Yamaha balance?

I'd slap a translucent coloured pickguard on that bongo, if I could find one.

It's alive! It's alive!

FRANKENBONGO!

Was it a pain to install? Did you end up using tape or screws?

As Yoda might say, "A very cool gadget, the BassMute is."

I didn't--I actually found it used. I had the same problem you did. Tried for months to get a response, and got nothing. You'd think they'd want to sell the thing....

When I saw someone offer it for cheaper (he never even installed it), I jumped on it.

While the BassMute is very cool--it ain't the frankenbongo. :D

Right now, it's set up with the double-sided tape. It seems to be holding just fine so I don't think I'll need to use the screws.

So, when going naked . . . screws in or screws out?

I went screws in, but I changed the black screws to stainless steel so it wouldn't look like a chocolate chip cookie. :D
