Hello All,

I'm carefully trying to decide on an inexpensive class A amp... in some cases I may also need an inexpensive cab to go with it... any recommendations?

Thanks,
Jag

Im saving up for a Mesa, after iI get my Petrucci.

I'd say Mesa though. I could not be anymore happier with an amp like that.

Avatar or Orange. The Orange is a bit more expensive but its worth it.

I didn't know there was such a thing as an inexpensive Class A amp these days. Seems like they're all boutique makers or companies like Mesa doing Class A. Well, I guess "inexpensive" is a relative term.

new, used or vintage? maybe try Traynor .... a word of caution, some of the older cabs from the 70s can weigh a ton.

check out Craigslist .... there's usually some interesting stuff there

happy shopping:)

I have an Epiphone Valve Junior 5 watt, single end, class A amp. Used to be $99 (son got it for me), but they now sell for $129 (shipping included from Musician's Friend). I run mine through an inexpensive Ear Candy 1x12 open back, loaded with an Eminence Legend GB-128 speaker (voiced like a Greenback but stouter). It sounds pretty cool, especially considering the price. Truth be told, though, I rarely use it, preferring a more solid and versatile 50 watt 6L6 tube amp.

I forgot about the little epiphones. The head matches with a cheap 1 12" cab. I think the speaker is a celestion 16 ohm.

Build your own :)

I'm in the process of finishing off a 2 x 12 (I'll eventually have two of them) it's really good fun.

Do you mean your Epi/cab/speaker? Or do you mean what speaker comes in the Epi combo? Pretty sure that's a 10".

Another cool feature on the lil Epi head, it's got 4/8/16 ohm speaker outs. I've heard they sound good on a quad cab. It's a very intimate and direct sounding/feeling amp, I guess largely due to it being single ended. One volume knob, one power tube, one preamp tube, period.

The Ear Candy cabs can be daisy chained - adding another touch of versatility. While my favorite speaker for my Laneys are Em Wizards, the raw, woody quality of the Legend GB works better with the Epi Jr. - to my ears.

Only thing I miss is reverb, and I don't use pedals anymore.

Off the off topic, but I've yet to hear a reverb that compared with the reverb of my first amp: 1966 Ampeg Gemini II. Simply a phenomenal reverb.

I have a Crate 1x12 closed back cab that was supposedly designed after the Bogner Cube. It's a great sounding cab with some thump in a live setting. perfect to mic. I put an emminence EVM clone in it. Does metal well. Crate logo comes right off to reveal a decent looking black cab. Small enough to tote, but not too small to screw the tone. Makes a super ext. cab to combine with an open back combo too.
you can usually find them cheap.

I always thought an Orange Tiny Terror on an Avatar cab would be a great sounding low cost amp.
