Hello everybody,

I visited my EBMM dealer today. He had in his display stand a 20th Silo w/ flame top w/ ventage tremolo. I read on various site that it had the tone of Gibson's guitars. Is it true??? What I like of this guitar, it is that it has an excellent neck of 24 frets, a ventage tremolo that allowing me to be able to decrease the low E to D without loose the other strings and an incredible top. I know all the characteristics of the manufacturing of this guitar. I doesn't have the chance to try it in an amp because of the lack of time and I always doesn't feel comfortable to play alone in a store. I would like your comments on this guitar please.

I am interested to have a JP7 with piezo too. I have never played on one and I wonder if we can become used to play as if it was a 6 strings one. I am a big fan of John Petrucci and Dream Theater, of Rush and the progressive in generally but also of Heavy Metal of the 80's and 90's.

I play in a band which plays classics rock and the heavy metal of the 80's as ACDC, Scorpios, Van Halen, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth. We want to add in our directory a bit of grunge and the alternative as Alice in chain, STP, Godsmack, Disturbed, System of has down, Evanescence, 3 days grace...

Do you think that my choices are right for the music style which I want to play or I should think for other thing? I possess at the present a Lado one piece, w/ 24 frets, w/ FloydRoseII that I possess since17 years and for the diversification in the choices of songs which we want to make, I have to invest in new guitars.

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,
I am not a great player but if you can get your hands on a 20th Silo you should do it now, a fantastic guitar with tons of sounds and tone, also I have palyed a JP and it is also a great guitar and would suit your style but as the late great Dimebag said bro if you cant play six strings why F**k with seven, so I can never recommend a seven string, but both are great and you can not go wrong.:)

Hi fingbeagles,

I'm not a very talented player but I work hard to progress this way. The thing I want to know for the JP7 is if it's hard to be used to play as that the fat B string doesn't be there? I would like to play the 7strings as its a 6 strings. If I can be able to not purchase anoter 6 string w/piezo it will be great for my wallet.:D

Thanks for your answer for the 20th Silo. If it was a quilted top I don't let it there for sure.;)

if my 20th silo has a gibson tone then i'm a grilled elk medallion.

Sorry Rob for talking of Gibson. I have never heard a sample of the 20th silo. I would like to know if it is possible to have a sound as Slash or Randy Road, with this guitar. I don't want to offend somebody. I just have some difficulties to expressing myself in language other than the one that I use every day.

All the best

Guitar is only one part of the equation- with the right EQ and amp you a given guitar can have a lot of different sounds.

The 20th can sound heavy as hell. Cranked with the right amount of gain I don't think you'll have any problems getting your favourite hard rock tones from the bridge pickup (the neck, not so much). It flat out rocks.

Personally I'd do it. If you decide you don't like it and want to sell it down the road I don't think you'd lose much money in the process. Just my two cents.

Another approach is to spend enough time at the dealer trying out the Silo to see if you really like it ... I know you don't feel comfortable in the store, but it's a lot of money and worth it to make sure you get what you want.

Ok, as a seven string player I can say all it takes is practice. It's also worth keeping in mind there is nothing you can play on a six that you can't play on a seven =)

I guess technically that has to be true, but anytime I play a 7string I have to adjust my playing significantly -- typically through silencing the B when I don't need it and compensating for the width of the fretboard -- and I feel much, much less capable on a 7 string. But I guess you're right, with enough practice anything is possible (maybe I should practice more).

My advice is only get the 7 if you'll be using it a significant amount. Otherwise you can fake it with 4ths when you need to.

edit: Also, is the 7 string useful for anything besides metal? /thread hijack

I can vouch for the 7 string here.

It is a FANTASTIC instrument. I'm writing what I hope it becomes my first album and this guitar has helped significantly it has changed my playing, my musical vision. It inspires me to cross a lot of boundaries. The tonal palette is very nice.

NOW

Im DROOLING for a 20th Anniv Silo, I wish I could get one but I can't. I do not own one but it IS an AMAZING instrument very different to the JP7 but great nonetheless. As it has been reported it plays very good and does a nice job with vintage tones. I hope one day to be able to snag one from ebay or something.

Seriously I think you are on the right track with your choices. :)

I went thru my stock to become familiar with the instruments and I have to tell you the 20th and Sterling are the two stand out instruments in this lot. That 20th is huge in tone. And this is from a hard core Y2D player

Thank's for all your comment all. Its very helpfull.

Since 17 years, I take all my time, my love and my money for my family. Since 2 years, I began to playing in a band and it made me fell so great. Especialy live performance. My wife told me to please me and it is the way I want to make it. It's gonna hurt my wallet but its for the right cause.

The JP7 doesn't be use often with the band. Maybe at most for 5 songs. But for my personal pleasure to play some Dream Theater (especialy "A change of season) that I wish to play since the first time I hear it and some original personal stuff. That's the point why I ask for the playability on a 7 strings as a 6 one.

Thank's all

Well for example my fave tracks of my music so far are:

1. Funk Fusion one, I have a NICE slap guitar thing going on exchanging lines with the bass. Also jumps to a nice lead tone in jazz for the solo.

2. Classic hard rock one, think good ol' riffs with up beat tempo that make you move your head. Needless to say a nice solo is there.

3. A slow tempo song, all in clean tones. Kind of a bluesy thing.

The guitar delivers amazing performance, also when I received my guitar I couldnt play at my normal speed (read: shred/fast) But I had to get used to it. I come from a Jackson and Ibanez. The difference is GREAT, and I think my playing has improved.
