Input jack problems on SR4

I plugged in my Sting Ray today and got no sound!! i determined that the problem was the input jack and when i moved it around i got that crackle. I tried a few different cords, and that didn't help.

but theres no back cover for me to take off the back of my Sting Ray, like explained for the problem with a Bongo.

Anyone know what to do.

if you really want to check it out yourself you can get to it from the front ... take off the eq and volume knobs (there's a set screw youll have to loosen) then take off the chrome cover

ive never actually removed teh cover but just lookin at it real quick it looks like the above steps should get ya there. good luck dude

Did you check the obvious...battery!

Is the Bass still covered by warranty? If so, you may have problems if you attempt to fix it yourself. Whether still under warranty or not, I suggest you contact EB for advice.

On a Sting Ray with 2 band EQ, the jack is located on the control plate. To replace it, the 8 screws supporting the plate have to be removed.

If you have 3 band EQ, 4 screws supporting the small rectangular plate on the underside of the body have to be removed.

A spanner is needed to remove the nut securing the jack. If not the correct size, it could slip and scratch the chrome and/or body finish.

Also, certain amount of soldering is involved.

If you've never done this type of thing before, I suggest you get professional assistance.

Or the cable from the battery box to the pre-amp moght have snapped, it happened to my Stingray too. 5 minutes of work at the guitar shop

Check the battery first as others have said.

If it is the input jack, it shouldn't be all that costly to fix/replace. I had that problem with my old passive Reverend (great bass btw), and for less than $3 it was replaced. A friend of mine actually did the soldering work, and the new jack was cheap.

Hey.
It's not under warranty anymore, so i decided to take off the four screws holding the rectangular plate in. Everything looks to be in order... heres a picture if you guys can see anything that looks off.

I checked the battery and its good.

I know this may be way off the mark - and I am not being offensive - but is the cable ok? Have had a similar problem a while ago and it was the soldering in the cable jack that was the problem.

Dunno if that helps - thought might be worth a mention

I've had that too, with a few cables. Could easily be that.

Nope - sorry, I am a complete Eijjit.....read the first post properly now and he said he has tried a couple of cords - which I assume means instrument cables.

So unless they were all faulty I am off to hang my head in shame

Yea, its ok. I bought a new cable about a week ago, because my last one recently died, hmm that coul have been the same problem not the cable...
But i did try a few anyways.

How about sticking the cable in while you have it out and see if you can tell if it is making good contact or not?

I put in the cable while the input jack was out and it didn't look like it was making good contact with the little metal thing that clicks it in. I bent that down a tad and tightened some other stuff, put the cable back in, the fit was better, and the problem was gone. I put it all back together and tighened it up, and i havent had any troubles. A lot did seem to be loose though so i don't know if thats what actually did it, but hey its working! thanks guys

Good deal ya got it fixed. If you don't do it already loop your cable through the strap. Stepping on one plugged straight in sure way to have that problem.

Very simple fix, What has happened somewhere down the line your cord was plugged in and got stepped on and Stretched the inside of the jack.


there's enough room to pull the jack out and with a small needle nose you can rebend the contacts and you'll be back in business.

Yea, i was relly just winging it and got lucky! When i can remember i put the cable around the strap, but whenever i get together with some poeple to jam i always forget.
Its been ripped out so many times though, i guess i better start thinking.
