I think over the last day or so, I've really began "clicking" with my SR5. I've had it for a few months now, and I suddenly became very comfortable with it (I've played 4-string basses for as long as I've been playing bass). I played my SR4 the other day, and I felt like it was missing something.

I feel another GAS attack coming on!

I know what you mean. I've been without a five-string for a while. Even though I prefer being a four-banger, it's nice to have that (lower) voice extention as an option at my disposal.

I play a sterling.... I find that i can get the stingray tone

I know where you're coming from, but that's simply not the case.

I carefully compared many basses before buying my latest, a Stingray 4, and I can confidently say that absolutely without exception there is only one bass that gets that Stingray tone, and that is a Stingray.

The Sterling is a nice bass, real nice, and it gets close, but it's just not the same. Call it what you want, hi fi, more balls, grittier, whatever, the important thing is that they definitely sound different.

I agree. After playing an SR5 for 3 years when I got my SR4 I was surprised to find out my SR5 did not sound like a Stingray.I was bummed at first because I think the SR5 is the best sounding bass ever but I have now grown to love the Stingray just as much. They are indeed different though, the Stingray is much more aggressive and and growly. It's good to have basses that don't sound exactly like each other but similar, don't you think?

I think it depends on how you measure these things. I've had a fair amount of Sterlings and Stingrays, and yes, they are two different basses. Which is as it should be. The Bongo would also be different.

But there is, to my ears, a certain sound that all EBMM basses have. With proper EQ, I've found Sterlings to sound - if I choose - quite like a Stingray.

Now, am I talking about sitting at home with no other noises going on, my ear stuck to the cabinet? No, I am not. I mean that I tend to want to get the same basic tone (at least to begin with) out of my basses and then tweak a bit for the song or the room or my mood or the color of the walls or whatever....and, in a sort of loud, raucous rock and roll situation, Sterlings can sound very much like a Stingray. If that's what you want.

I still maintain that I can get a very nice Stingray-esque tone from a dual hummer Bongo, too. But again, we're not talking about using frequency analyzers or rocket science in a deadened room. I'm talking about playing with other humans who tend to make a lot of noise.

The Sterling is a nice bass, real nice, and it gets close, but it's just not the same. Call it what you want, hi fi, more balls, grittier, whatever, the important thing is that they definitely sound different.

Can't argue with any of that. They AREN'T the same bass, so they won't sound exactly the same, but are we talking about something that exacting?

One of these days I'll figure out this whole computer recording thing and see if, in a noisy rock-n-roll environment, anyone can tell the difference.

It would be an interesting experiment, but someone else better get on it because I'm notoriously bad about getting around to such things.

In any case, different choices are GOOD.

i own only one mm, but truly love the tone, and feel of it. for years i've played spectors, warwicks, fenders, and yes even a 4001(don't want to use the "r" word)
the specs and wicks are 5's but the stingray is a 4 . i've been wanting to buy a stingray5, but now after spending a few days reading your threads, part of my tax return will be used on a new sr5. you guys really know your $h!t, and have helped me make up my mind to convert for good. EBMM forever!:) :)
