Hey guys check out the pic... i found this over on the ibanez website. I am going to be getting one and possibly install this on my JPM to help keep the bridge stable among other things.

its an ibanez backstop. its like a dual piston tremsetter. looks like an ingenious little device. Do you t hink its safe to install in the EBJPM? if not im going to put it in an ibanez and see how it goes with that. h

"The Backstop is a tremolo addon that inserts in the tremolo cavity to provide counter pressure againsts the floating tremolo. It is similar to items like the hipshot, but better in that it does not over-stiffen the tremolo. Note that the Backstop is no longer available from Ibanez, even though Vai uses it on some of his guitars.

According to Ibanez, the Backstop was said to have provided these benefits:

Accurate Return to Pitch - by compensating for the difference in tension between the gutiar strings and the tremolo springs, the Back Stop brings the tremolo back to pitch every time

Simplified Tuning - the Back Stop stabilizes the tremolo so that the guitar can be tuned quickly, with no need to retune

In-Tune String Bending - bending a string will not make the other strings go flat, as with conventional tremolo systems. This allows you to hit an open string while bending other notets. Both the bent note and the open string will be in tune

Tuning Stability - the backstop locks the tremolo in place so that the guitar remains in tune even if you break a string. This feature is important in live performance, allowing you to continue playing in-tune. "

heres a link that give the info on this thing

One thing you do need to realize with a floating system is that you need to be careful of the pressure you're putting on the bridge. That can cause what you percieve to be tuning issues. Other than that the backstop seems like a dece idea, however since theyre no longer in production, probably cost you a few bucks, and if it ends up getting damaged there's nary a replacement for it since Ibenhad stopped making them. I was thinking aboput a tremsetter at some point, but I don't think it's necessary and the other ish with the TS is that it will eliminate the bar flutter from what I've heard.

BackStops sit under the springs in the trem cavity, with the middle spring running smack dab down the middle of the BackStop between the two pistons... If your trem cavity isn't deep enough to give the spring clearance over the BackStop once the BackStop is installed, your investment goes down the tubes. I had a Jem that wasn't routed deep enough for a BackStop. Of course, I had others that were, but the point is you won't know until you try...

Anyway, the BackStop works well enough that Steve Vai continues to use them to this day, but they are an absolute B-I-T-C-H to set up!! I have one left (at one time I had five), and every time I think of installing it on one guitar or another I go sit on the couch until the idea goes away. Trust me on this; if you can't completely set up your guitar on your own - trem, springs, neck relief, intonation, everything - you do NOT want to mess with installing and setting up a BackStop....

Orange... yeah i know the thing about the floating trems you mentioned. when im tuning i dont have my hands on the bridge at all... its just habit. Anyways... the reason why im asking this is because i found a guy who has "new" one... he has one with the installation instructions that he never installed and wants to trade it for a Boss TR-2 pedal. i figured why not? i dont use the trem pedal that much anyways.. that and i dont really like it.

I know what to look for when it comes to setups... though i dont really do them myself. I figured id have my tech guy down at the local store put it in for me. Either way i figured it would be cool to have and try out, though i hope the JP is routed deep enough to install it. ... we'll see i guess.

By the way... the guy trading to me wants me to send him the pedal first then he'll send it out rather than sending his and mine out at the same time... should i be wary? he gave me his EBay name so i could check out his feed back... he says its good... i have yet to get time to check it out.... im going to right now if i can figure out how haha. nOOB!!!

thanks

Ok ther verdict on the hipshot. They eliminate all flutter, even intentional flutter. So if you plan on getting one and you want flutter, then look elsewhere.
