Just wondering what route you all go down as far as insurance goes for should the worst happen!

Nad, your standard homeowner's insurance will cover your EB's should you have an incident at your home like a fire, flood or theft. I would expect that renter's insurance offers the same, if you are not a homeowner. These coverages have limits.

Therefore, you can purchase additional personal property insurance for the EB's to be safe. This is not an endorsement, but check out websites like Allstate or State Farm for more info. Perhaps someone out here uses a company in which they're very happy.

UK policy owners - please read your home insurance small print. It is unlikely that your"balls" will be covered in full on contents insurance. You would be wise to take advice from the policy provider.

My home owners insurance will not cover any tools of my trade while thay are being used to earn an income.

So basically - I have a few guitars, amps etc that really never leave the house - these are covered on my home owner's policy.

Any of the gear in rotation for my live work is covered under a separate policy that American Federation of Musicians members can purchase for a fairly decent rate. This policy covers any damages, theft etc while 'in the field".

I would think that if these 'gigging' instruments were in my home and were stolen, or were in a fire or flood etc...then my homeowner's policy would cover them instead of the specialized insurance.

I've learned the hard way too - I lost a full PA, lighting, amps, mics etc in a bar fire (the place was actually torched and the owner left the country) and at the time I was completely uninsured. That hurt.

Also been lucky enough to experience petty theft of microphones, pedalboards, etc, etc... so I'm a big believer in insurance.

I really can't stress to all you guys who invested alot in your gear that you have to insure it. I took out a special supplemetal insurance rider on my collection listing each guitar and its value. If something horrible happens, who wants the hassle of trying to prove what you owned and the value of each item?

I have about 10k in gear laying around the house and had always been told it was covered under my standard policy. I decided to check again about 3 months ago when I added another guitar, and my agent who is a close friend and with State Farm said they were all covered with my homeowners policy and no additional coverage was needed.

I hear ya, but when you have over 50 guitars, and another 10 g's in gear you end up being a special case. Can you imagine if some thing bad happened and after the fact I told my agent, "oh, by the way, I have about 100 g's in music gear and all the receipts were lost with my stuff, now where's my check?"

I did ask the specific questions and here are the highlights.

They are covered under my home owners insurance.
$500 deductible per event.
The replacement value of all my guitars is less than my total coverage.
They are covered when they are in a secure place. (That does not include a bar)

I did the same exact thing:
-regular H.O. policy.
-special rider for all the contents of "KevLand".

The ins. agent came over, took tons of pics (front, back, cases, etc.), and I gave him copies of all the documentation I had on the gear (COA's, reciepts, etc.) The rider cost of pennies a day is worth it so I can sleep at night knowing my gear is covered.

The only thing that would suck is that a few of them are "1 of 1" and pretty much irreplaceable. Then again, I could use that big fat check to dry my tears. :)

Oh- and a suggestion: Invest in a fire-proof safe. I saw them last week at Lowe's for under $200. They're a great way to keep documents secure and in one centralized location.
I used to keep all my docs in the guitar's respective case...but those aren't fire-proof. LOL And in the event of them getting stolen, well...theives love 'case candy' even more than we do. :)

In the past few years I've been told by 3 different insurance companies that any "Tools of the trade", I.E. any equipment used to earn money with, are most definitely NOT covered under a homeowner's policy. When I told my agent I had 30k of gear at the house, including 15+ guitars and 4 amps, he said - and I quote, "You'd have one hell of a time convincing them that you're just a collector, and even if you could, they won't reimburse you for a special collection."

Get a musician's policy if you have any kind of serious money invested, and especially if you gig professionally.
