Are there any instances of an axis neck pickup being on the wrong side from the factory ?

The owner of this guitar i'm interested in is telling me that he is fairly positive that the guitar has had an inverted axis neck pickup since day one !

I've never seen one hanging in a store with it inverted, I really would doubt it comes from the factory like that. I've heard that a number of people do it though. Does anyone know why? What's the sound difference?

Upsidew down EVH/Axis neck pickups all started when EVH inverted his. This is why the Wolfgang neck pickup is mounted upside down. I read once he did it because Peter Green had his upside down on the famous '59 Les Paul which is now owned by Gary Moore.

The deal with inverting the neck pickup is to be able to tap the coils, and have two inner single coils which are spaced apart such a distance as to be similar to the spacing of two pickups on a strat. Thus, when you tap the 'buckers, the resultant (middle position) sound is very similar to positions 2 & 4 on a stratocaster.

This trick is by no means exclusive to EBMM owners, but it does seem to be a popular modification to the Axis and VH models.

Why not just tap the inner coils on each pickup? i.e. accomplish that with wiring rather than physically flipping the neck pickup?
