Is a MM Petrucci a good addition to a MM Luke?

Hey,

I allready own a MM Luke and I'm very satisfied. Now I've the chance to get a Petrucci really cheap, but I don't look for a guitar which has a similar Sound. Normally I would look for a Les Paul or PRS (that's what I'm looking for...), but as I said it's the price...

So I really like the Leadtone of the Luke. Thus I'm looking for a Rhythm-Guitar. Not really the Petrucci-Sound, but rather more a Hi-Gain-Rhythm-Sound like Metallica or Rammstein. So the Guitar should sound good with dropes tunings, too. The piezo is definetly a plus! The Leadtone should complete my Solosound (the Luke is rather 80s-like...you know what I mean).

Let me tell you know, as a JP owner, (well former owner now -_-) that the JP is an extremely versatile guitar, especially with piezo, and an extremely comfortable one at that as well.

However, be very careful also about the tones you're looking for, as that was the reason I had to let mine go. The bridge bucker is nice n' hot and will give you that awesome crunch and bite through gain and distortion. Probably the highlight of the guitar. However with the 24 fret board, the neck bucker takes on a different tone moved down on the neck. It's not bad by any means at all, but if you need versatility in emulating single coil sounds, getting some clean twang out of it, it may not be the guitar for you. That is the ONLY drawback (which makes sense) it IS a sig model of a Metal player.

The short answer is "YES" it will be a good addition and offer the tone you described. If the price is really that good, I'd go for it.

Steve, sorry to hear you're selling the JP. Hopefully the next EBMM in your hands comes closer to what you're looking for.

Well, I would love to add a Luke to my stable, so I say YES it is a good addition! They are both very pretty guitars with awesome playability and differing tones.

Well...is it true that the necks of oth guitars are very different? So could it be a problem to switch between them?

Luke to JP is the easiest transition from any other EBMM axe I can think of.

You should absolutely find an opportunity to wrap your hand around one though. Don't be intimidated, its a testament to the JP6's well thought out design when you see how natural it is to maneuver around the neck.

drop an 81 Emg in ya Luke then you have the Ultimate guitar!!! the jp is a great guitar but a big difference to the Luke

I have only played a JP for a few minutes. It was ok. The guitar was great, but it was not set correctly. It was a "normal", but now I'm looking for BFR!

Good choice. Good luck finding another guitar that will get any playing time with that around. There's also the BFR Luke of course and some very special 25th Anniversary guitars are still available. Choices choices.

I think the Luke and the JP are great guitars whether we are talking about BFRs or not. I don't have a Luke, but I have a regular JP and a BFR. I have always wanted a Luke The point is that they are very different guitars that have different strengths. I expect different things out of each one. So, I would use each one somewhat differently. I think they complement each other very well.
