Thank you BP! I'm glad someone else agrees with me about Rolling Stone. I admit that I struggle with what I find to be worse: Rolling Stone magazine or Saturday Night Live.

Don't be knockin' Joni Mitchell. She rules.

Wasn't knocking Joni Mitchell...she's a wonderful artist ("Coyote" is a favorite from her) I simply question her placement in comparison to Alex Lifeson whose impact on the instrument (in my opinion) surpasses that of Joni Mitchell's in my musical world.

Sterling you had to bring this up! Nothing ever written about guitar has ever infuriated me as this article made up by so called rock journalist of the supposed Bible of music publications. It had me so twisted that it was the only time in my life I ever wrote in to a magazine. Now I hate to measure up guitarist as if it is a competition, but this was so ludicrous, and down right ridicules, a monk would of been outraged.

This is basically a short sampling that explains it all- #85 Randy Rhoads/ #70 Eddie Vanhalen/#63 Danny Gatton/#57 Roy Buchanan/#55 Ritchie Blackmore/ Now on the insult to anyone who has ever played side #12 Kurt Cobain/#16 Johnny Ramone/#17 Jack White/#29 Ron Asheton/#52 Lou Reed? Yes you read write that Lou Reed! I was shocked one of those idiots even knew who Danny Gatton was lol.

As far as players like Vai, Morse, Satch, Yngwie, Petrucci, Luke, and many other greats they are no where to be found. Then again this is the same sh!t rag that used to pan every Zep album in there glory days, as well as listing Dylan the #7 greatest vocalist in there 100 greatest singers issues. There is no denying Dylan's genius especially as a writer, but great vocalist? I doubt Dylan himself would of left himself off that list. My brother has been subscribing since the first issue and keeps a few copies in the bathroom, where they belong.

Don't get me wrong, I love Alex Lifeson too. :) Now who has impacted guitar more is an interesting question. hmm....

I guess it just goes to show that there is an elite group of guitarists and equally an elite group of those who acknowledge them. Maybe its better that way. Same with EBMM. It always excites me when I see someone playing one. Maybe if they were as generic as your F and G we wouldn't appreciate the people who play them and why they do as much.

Okay I just found out today that they made a new list and incorparated the votes of a lot of guitarist this time around, which helped wipe a lot of the egg off of their faces.I still have not seen the new issue but the list is on line and improved 100X though still off the mark. Cobain and White have dropped all the way down into the 70s, while Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan have been totally left off this time lmfao! No matter what they try to do they exposed themselves for the clowns they are with the original list, and are just trying to redo this too sell a good months worth of camping toilet paper.

we all have our heroes and preferences and I think it's hard to limit the number of great guitarist to just 100

I can't even decide what is the best record I own. My answer will probaly change with my mood :)

Is it even dumber than getting worked up over a list in that mag?

^ That's a good one! As much as I love Springsteen (or Dylan, Neil Young)...I mean, this list is supposed to be about the "best" guitar players of all time, right?

If the list would've been named "The 500 most influential guitarists in Rock Music as it presents itself in 2011" it still could be argued with (and would not be that much better I guess) but choosing the "best" implies the choice being based on the technical abitilites and quality rather than the impact they created (with their band)...which of course makes this list completely ridiculous!

When they did it the first time I honestly believe the writers in Popular Mechanic could of done a better job. But since it was so ridicules a lot of guitar magazines did their own lists with much better results. This time around they had a lot of known players vote which is why it was pretty decent. I still can't stand that idiot Jann Wenner who I have zero respect for. He also wields too much power in who gets inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. A few years ago it was Wenner who found some obscure loophole that left the Dave Clark Five out, even though they received more votes than that great rocker Grand Master Flash! The shame though was that they got in the next year, but Mike Smith who was a truly great vocalist died a week before the ceremony.

well call me an idiot, but I really like Neil Young.... and all his guitars...

I absolutely love Neil Young and Springsteen and tons of others in that list whose music has had a huge impact on me...they're fabulous songwriters and musicians!

If they have a place in a list that shoud focus solely around the guitar playing skills is a different question IMO, especially given the huge amount of outstanding players who aren't even mentioned...
