I hadn't watched my Dream Theater Score DVD since I first bought it. Last night I was watching it, and I was wondering if Petrucci is playing a 20th Silo during "The Spirit Carries On". I don't have an awesome plasma, so maybe I was wrong, but it sure looked like the photos of 20th Silos I had seen. The pickups sure looked like the 20th and not the JP guitars. Am I right, or do I need to buy a new TV?

It is a 20th/JP hybrid that was created by BP for JP. Apparently JP was hanging out with Big Poppa and was noodling around on a 20th. He liked it so much that BP had 2 JP's made with the maple cap, mahogony tone block and 20th Silo pups. This is the guitar you see. It seems to have served as the first prototype for the F-1. If you do a search for "Sitrucci", you may find a little more information.

if im not mistaken, he was using a prototype guitar on that song. hybrid between the body of a 20th silo with JP's pickups and head stock. it is often referred to as the "sitrucci" =P

Im sure our friends here from the forum can give you a better info in regards to your question.

Forgive my ignorance in advance. Are you saying that the pickups on the guitar are the same as the Petrucci model with metal covers on them? Does that mean that the humbucker pickups on a guitar like the 20th are basically assembled the same as the humbuckers on the JP or the SS, just with a metal cover on it?

The pups are not the JP pups with metal covers, they are the pups used on the 20th anniversery Silo... these are custom DiMarzios often described as slightly tweaked Virtual PAF's and Virtual Hot PAF's.

JP has his own custom pickups, I believe they more closely resemble the Air Norton and D-Sonic from DiMarzio. I have no idea what the pickups are on the 20th. THis is getting out of the realm of my limited knowledge... we should probably wait until someone more informed is around... i'm interested as well :)

I had a followup question on pickups in general. I was thinking of putting it in its own thread.

What is the deal with the ribbon that is wrapped around the humbucker? Does it specifically do anything?

Man I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and I feel like a real n00b asking these questions.

I don't really know but I suspect its just to keep from exposing the coils

kneeoh is right the pups on the prototype that was made for JP are the same pickups as the 20th annv model....They are nothing like what JP uses on his original or new BFR JP'S...My advice is to search the forum and you will find your anwser.
