how big is the space you are gonna be utilizing.....?

i'm in a 14'X14' room.......

i use an antique table........that has two wings that fold out on either end.....it houses my monitors, computer and keyboard,my two 8 channel mixing boards ,one for all the drums, one for the rest of the room..........it's maybe 5'X5'.......nice and compact........

i can get to the drums and all my amps and guitars/basses with no problem........3 guys playin' isn't too bad up there either.

go antique BP...........do it.

woah......just saw Jack's post........some of those are pretty nice.........

BP I'd have a look at some computer desks, that what I use. Some have great shelves for the monitors and plenty of room for the computer, audio interfaces and the rest of the stuff that's needed. Plus they won't be as wide as the keyboard type stand.

German internet music store Thomann has some interesting stuff and I´m sure that there are similar stuff in USA. I suspect that they are constructed abit like Ikea furnitures and that you´ll have to spend a full weekend on the floor to assemble it.....

Studio Furniture - U.K. International Cyberstore

These companies are based in the US:

Argosy Studio Furniture and Technical Furniture 2008

Studio Furniture | Sweetwater.com

Recording Studio Furniture for Digidesign, Yamaha and other Recording Consoles with Matching Studio Equipment Racks from Sound Construction and Supply Inc.

It all really depends on how serious you wanna get and how much equipement you have. Console and lots of outboards or just a computer, speakers and a soundcard. Ikea has some really cheap stuff that some people use for their home recording setup. This one, for instance, with some add on´s:

IKEA | Computer workstations | Desktop solutions | FREDRIK | Computer work station

This is where it could start and it ends with custom made studio furniture/racks. It all depends on how much stuff you have, how much it can cost and how you want it to look. I had a joinery shop to build furns/racks in my studio and it actually didn´t get too expencive. But it´s of course MUCH more expencive than Ikea. But still affordable. This is what it looks like:

I often stand up when I work, good for the back, so my sound console and work space is set up abit higher from the floor than in most studios. And my chairs are also higher. I´ve had too many friends that have bad backs after years of sitting in too comfortable chairs in studios. So the ergonomical aspect can be wise to think about too. Works fine in my studio. I´m happy and so is my back.

My two cents....

Sincerely//Jan

Oh..... One more thing, and this is kind of important..... Just to be realistic......

Once you get into recording and studio stuff, try to plan for the future from start. You WILL get more stuff (very likely MUCH more stuff) in the future. So plan for that right away. Get more rack space than you need at this moment. You WILL fill it upp and most likely it will happen very soon. You´ll get microphone preamps, compressors and patchbsays. That will happen and it´s just for you to accept. It´s a poison......

So get more rack space than you need. Otherwise you´ll have to get all new studio furns again within a year. This is probably the best advice I can give. Don´t say that it won´t happen cause you´ll be lying to yourself. Prepare your wife too.....

Sincerely//Jan

Thank you. Very kind of you. It´s not very big but I can do pretty much everything except recording orchestras. But I´m not asked to do that kind of work very often. Once in over 10 years and then we went to Poland to record. Much cheaper. More pics if you are interested.

Back to topic. Work behches and rack cabinets......

hey BP, i used a wooden entertainment center for my studio "desk". 26" monitor, keyboard on shelf, all interfaces, tower, etc are hidden behind doors when not used. nice thing is room is very open to be used for other things when not recording. can be found at most furniture stores ( uhm Walmarts) durable and inexpensive. depends on your personal needs. looks great and very functional.

We ended up building our set up it just seemed easier that way, we are using the euphonix digital mixers and wanted to build a table that was flush with them and then mounted our genelec moniters at the right height yada yada, wasnt that much work but I am sure there must be someone making what your looking for....

Hey BP, Bovine and others in the know :)

Would it be feasible to have a forum dedicated to home audio recording?

I know some of the forum members have some cool setups. I am in the process of trying to figure out what I would need to start doing some recordings using a computer.

Maybe only have threads that can only be created by selected "guests" who are in the business but open for comment and questions by forum members?

Did not mean to hijack this thread but thought it was kind of related after seeing some of the photos and that BP is looking to set something up also.

Thanks,
Ant
