Is there any chance this is real?

The control plate cavity doesn't look right to me. Too many weaves on the upper curve of the routing. The upper horn doesn't look right either but that may be the angle of the pic.

With respect to the Sting Ray, these are neck introduction dates only. There are periods where different neck bolt configurations run concurrently. Both Pre-EB and EB were either using old stock (until depletion) or continued making the earlier bolt configurations for a time.

1976: Sting Ray commences production with a 3 bolt neck and bullet truss. Examples exist up to, and including 1981.

Circa 1980: 4 bolt neck and bullet truss. Examples exist up to, and including late 1990 (or even 1991...I'll have to check).

Late 1988 (early 1989) - Current: 6 bolt neck and capstan wheel truss (the 6 bolt appeared earlier in 1988 with the introduction of the SR5).

EDIT:

Typo error.

Should read ".......up to, and including 1980".

Thanks for that info! Great stuff!

This might be stating the obvious but I don't see a battery pocket on the back so surely it can't be genuine. I'm not aware of there ever being any passive Stingrays.

HA HA HA! I'm an idiot and didn't even realize that!

I have already mdae a deduction. You will notice it on your next check.
Please try to do better. :D

Not that it really matters now, but EB neck pockets show bare wood in the neck pockets because the bodies are bolted on a stick during finishing...

its probably an olp body. that blue is the other color that they sold them in when they were selling them in two colors (blue and black)

It does look very similar, except the pickup rout in each of my OLPs isn't "pickup-shaped". It's a large rectangle. So unless OLP changed their tooling, I'd say this is a homemade body.

Funny - I noticed the battery cover wasn't there but I figured since no one else mentioned it, there must be a reasonable explaination for it not being there... :o

i was looking at an early Strat ('57 or '60) but I contacted my uncle who is very knowledgable and was able to tell me it was a fake based upon pole spacing in the pickups and the screws that were used. I informed him that the serial number was jiving with the Fender Numbers... and that the original papers were included... upon further inspection. The "original" papers had a pciture of a gig bag. That was not original... Basically!

Sometimes the sellers shoot themeselves in the foot with their pictures. IF you know what you are looking for you can definately pick out the fakes. Espcially if you work with EBMM and you see the real deal everyday.
If they say it's a FAKE they're 100% right!

BOGUS.....

I would email the guy and tell him that if he likes his 100% feedback he should stop telling people in writing that it could be real.

You know when the boss posts something like this its time to let something pass on the bay. :)

Not the biggest ringing endorsement I have heard.
