Oh great, I can see what'll be the big topic of conversation for the next 6 months on TalkBass. I can see it now, "Well, my SX StingRay copy sounds better than the real thing. I'm gonna modify mine with a brass nut, a BadAss and a Bart."

Happens all the time. There's a thread at TB about a guy who put a J-Retro preamp into his SX Jazz. The electronics probably cost three or four times what the bass did.

I have to confess that I do in fact own an SX Jazz 5-string, which I went so far as having a fret job done on to make it playable. I needed a very (VERY) cheap bass to keep in the closet at home, since my Bongo lives at the rehearsal space.

It's playable and it was really, really cheap. That's pretty much all I can say about it. It's not the worst bass I've ever owned (anybody remember Hondo?), but every time I plug it in I wish I was playing my Bongo instead. I'm not the kind of guy who collects basses...I own just the two, and I've spent all the serious money on amplification. One of these days, though, something's gonna snap in my head and I'll get a real bass to practice with instead.

There are a lot of "turd polishers" on TB who think putting $500 worth of aftermarket components into a $100 bass makes sense. Having frets levelled to achieve a playable beater is one thing but putting a J-Retro into an SX is, more or less, the definition of insanity IMO. What tears me up more than anything is when somebody goes on and on about how their $100 SX P-Bass is far better than any USA Fender ever made. There's nothing wrong with SX stuff, but it is what it is...beginner gear, designed for beginners (or those who want / need a cheap beater). Mark my words, in a couple of months there will be dozens of threads over there talking about how good the SX StingRays are and how crappy EBMM's are.

There's no need to fear............

...but I'm still a little disgusted by it.

Screw those SX Jazzes and screw these cheap-ass copies.

"A bold bass with a bold look and sound!"

Yes, that you attempt to turn into a cheap whore.

(No offense to any of you whores meant.)

I don't know about the bass, but I'm pretty sure this isn't legal.

I believe the 3+1 headstock is "THE" thing that is licensed on an OLP bass.....if memory serves me correctly, that's what it said on the back of the headstock.

Yeah....all the high dollar electronics in the world aren't going to polish a turd of a $100 bass.

No shortage of EB bashers at TB. I just came across this:

Well, if you want to cherry pick, you can pick any brand, number of strings, wood choice, string, right hand technique, etc, etc and there will be a basher for it. There are, after all, over 30,000 users at TB.

Good point, and to be fair I am not one of those 30,000 users and I rarely read TB. Also, I have taken the liberty of removing the eyeroll in my quote of your response. :)

I actually do believe I saw a thread over there today that asked what the plastic film on a Bongo pickguard was for.

I swear did!

Can't find it now.
