Oh, my God!

So I'm sitting here online on messenger with a friend, discussing this relative new project from Washington called Animals As Leaders..
We are both guitarplayers, so the discussion twisted to 8 string guitars.

Along the ride I told him I was pretty sattisfied with my MM 7 string, and he replied that he had heard MM was thinking about an 8-string!

Oh, my freaking God!

Somebody in here with more insight on MM than me... Is this a joke, and mislead info?
Ffs I was about to piss in my pants

Well for you I would hope it was true as I would hate to dash your hopes, but if I had to take a guess I would say dont believe everything you hear. I really do not see 8 string guitars flying off the rack. But then again you never know.

I wouldn't know what to do with it. One day I HAD to have a Universe. After the two week honeymoon was over I figured out that my brain just couldn't handle that extra string, let alone 8 :D

I love Meshuggah, but I have to admit it all sounds so damn heavy I wonder what that 8-string brings to the table that a modified detuned 7 could not. I just can't see or hear those boys doodling around on that top string.

Then again, looking at my first paragraph, my brain-wiring is obviously simply insufficient to handle the possibilities ;)

How low can you go is my question? I think its pointless and there is a bass guitar for a reason. If u want to sound heavier go for a baritone guitar. No offense to anyone...just my 2 cents on this.

I'd order one in a flash..
I'm thinking about buying the Ibanez version, but come on..
If MM came out with one, I'd rather go for that.

I've tried an 8 string, and the concept is easy.
It's 8 strings, and the two lowest strings can be adjusted tuningwise.
You can tune the lowest till E, and play classical fingerplay with a low-B middle, and a deep low octave E in the bottomn, and so forth.
The possibilities are endless.
The usually come with a 28" neck, so tuning down is a dream.

Just speculating here, but I think EBMM would want to have an endorsee for something like that. Same as the Bongo 6 string coming about with John Myung...

Maybe Chris Letchford and/or Travis LeVrier from Scale The Summit?

Fredrik Thordendal, their guitarist, does tons of Holdsworth-esque jazzy stuff on the top few strings during his solos, and plays the rhythms on the lower strings. I know it's not for everyone, but there definitely are people who utilize it well.

There are a few guys that can make that kind of thing work. Charlie Hunter (killer jazz player) has some neat ones ... bottom few strings are bass, top are guitar, varied scale length.

If u want to sound heavier go for a baritone guitar. No offense to anyone...just my 2 cents on this.

exactly!

That's not necessarily true :D A baritone will certainly lower the pitch, but not necessarily make you sound heavier...look at Joe Bonamassa and his JP Bari.

I love my JP7's...not just because they sound heavier...but because I can have that low B, *PLUS* still have the full range of a standard 6 string. It's the broader range I'm after. But the 8 string guitars I've played have felt unwieldy to me. The necks are too wide for my hands.

So, for the extended range, I think 8 strings are a cool idea. But as far as playing one, I think it would be uncomfortable.
