Who said you have to go low just coz its a 8 string guitar? Why not tune up the 1st string?
I'd love to see Metheny play it, he would utilize it to the max. And to say that Fredrik from Meshuggah doesnt "doodle" around the top string is very silly mate.

I would think, just like the "set neck" or "carved top" Ball that until an artist needs one that we will not see an 8 string guitar. My guess "if" we were to see one at any point it would be JP using a JP8 prototype or a "one off"...

As for me... 6 strings is all I need...

I don't think John Petrucci will ever play the 8 string in Dream Theater..
More likely he will test it on one of his solo albums, but I doubt it.

Hey mate, I said I can't hear Meshuggah playing the high string with all the heavyness going on nor can I remember seeing it on one of their videos. I didn't say they didn't, so that kinda makes misquoting very silly. Then again, my top end hearing actually isn't what it used to be after years standing next to a very loud drummer and his equally loud china cymbal so I might have missed those high parts when having a song like "Bleed" pound at me with the stereo way too loud . I've been following them since Destroy Erase Improve, I love those guys, so no disrespect meant for Meshuggah .

There are a few guys that can make that kind of thing work. Charlie Hunter (killer jazz player) has some neat ones ... bottom few strings are bass, top are guitar, varied scale length.

When i read this thread the first time, I went to '8 string guitar' as in Mesuggah (?)....I didn't even THINK about Charlie, who is a BIG time influence on me.

If BP did one of those I'd definitely get one. After crapping my pants with joy.

But believe me the bongo (bass) is really a nice instrument, and every guitarist should own one

Hah ... yeah BP's made a few comments about that one never making it to production as well. For the record, the original design of the Bongo bass is closer to that- it was refined further before it made it to production.

For those who don't know the story on that one, BP had approached the guys at the design arm off BMW to come up with a new bass, something that was quite a departure from the traditional designs. They took the concept and along with some other innovations (like the Bongo preamp/Nd pickups) the Bongo was born (one of the coolest basses to ever see the light of day). So that's where the body style came from.

Yeah, an 8 string doesn't necessarily mean a low F. You can have a higher string instead, as well. 7 is enough for me, though. Gets everything within a guitar-y range just fine.

8 string necks aren't a stretch if you're used to playing full 2 inch wide classical guitar necks. Though in my case being a lumbering giant with big hands helps, but agility is always better! (Something I could use more of)

Honestly, I've only heard of 8 strings in rumor, never really a mainstream thing by any means.

But it certainly would be interesting. But not to someone like me who needs more practice with a 6. Let alone getting to a 7.
