I knew that would get your attention! :D

Seriously though I'm redesigning our bands myspace and I'm making a list of equipment we use. Although we are not endorsed by companies like EB, Ampeg, or Mesa is it ok to say "We Endorse.."? I'm not saying we are endorsed by these companies because that would mean they are supporting us. Instead I am saying we endorse them meaning we support them :p

It's all just wordplay but I don't want to step in poo.

If you have lots of great gear and advertise your gig dates - you are letting people know exactly were they can get hold of your equipment.

So either buy great gear and don't gig, or gig like mad and buy cheap gear?

I don't really like either one of those ideas, right in the middle is where I would like to be!

I play MusicMan guitars.

You play musicman guitars? What a coincidence! So do I!

Pete, that was funny and made me laugh. I'm still jealous of your redrise petrucci with the rw neck.

PeteDuBaldo - what Im saying is advertise your gigs. Dont advertise what gear will be readily available at what location at a certain time, for opportunists or people who generally enjoy robbing gear.

If you've never had any gear robbed, be it a mic or a van load of top end gear - then expect it, because it happens to 99.9% of musicians. Id just prefer to not advertise what gear will be at my gigs waiting to be pinched. Ive seen it hundreds of times, from Yamaha Pacificas to Boss drum machines to Vintage Gibson LP Goldtops to Snares and everything inbetween. Ofcourse people will see me playing my stuff but if there is a slight chance of not prewarning people whats on offer then Im all for it. As I say a list of whats gonna all be in the same van and at what time and place is not tempting enough for these people who steal gear - I dont know what is.... Im talking from the bad side of experience.

As well as a full van of gear stopping outside a club for mere minutes before being unloaded, being stolen - I guy I know was auditioning (or so he thought) for a band. They met up he loaded his brand new Tama kit into the bands van, then got in the car with the other band members and never saw his kit again, they pulled up miles away and threw him out the car and never saw them again either.

So I wouldnt say I was paranoid but just very very cautious.

But that means you can't even have pictures of your band on stage on the web - if you're seen playing the same guitars through the same amp at multiple gigs it's as good as a list.

If you gig out, regardless of the gear, you always run the risk of something growing legs and disappearing if you don't keep a watchful eye on your stuff. I try to keep both eyes on my equipment and the rest of my bands equipment at all times when we are gigging out so nothing gets stolen, but there's always the risk. I keep my BFR by my side at all times because I'm paranoid about it particularly. If they can pick up my 170lb rack system and run off with it then they deserve it lol.

As in the case with that drummer getting basically kidnapped, well nothing but a concealed weapon is gonna help in that situation.

So when you're gigging you need to play behind a curtain then? I mean, they might not see it in advance but they're going to see it while it's on the stage, and that just gives them a better idea of what stuff you have right there. They might watch you go off the stage to take it from you outside on your way to the van! Sounds to me like you're being a tad paranoid as someone else said. :p

If people want your gear, and you give them the opportunity to steal it, they will. Keep your eyes on your stuff when you gig. Simple as that. Unless they hold you up at gunpoint, there's no real way they can steal your stuff from you if you're next to it or watching it closely. If you're playing in a band that usually means you have somewhere between 3-5+ people right? You're saying not ONE person could chill with your gear when you're not playing? If you value your gear, you might want to consider that option. ;)

As for your friend, I don't know about you but I don't normally load up my expensive gear in a van with a bunch of strangers and hope that they're all great guys, but that might just be me...

I cant believe an opinion meant as being a friendly tip or a mere warning is being picked at so meticulously! Jeez, you guys must have waay too much time on your hands!

If you want to pick holes HighGain510 - I did say that obviously people will still see us onstage and if there was a chance of narrowing down the chance of getting robbed by not posting what gear we have on a web page then I wont post it. As far as being onstage (usually raised from the floor) in dark conditions - the most people usually see is the guitar and a Marshall or Line 6 logo here and there - and surely nobody is gonna walk on stage and pinch stuff while you are already playing - I was more on about the van arriving at venues and the possibility of a planned robbery. But hey Im not gonna spoonfeed you and spell out every single point I make, Im just hoping that you realise that I was just mentioning a few things I have experienced and a few of the more naive band members may just bear some things in mind.

Just to clarify - it was not my van that got nicked. It was another band I knew - the guy who had the van was on his own, meeting the rest of the members within a few minutes... he got out the van, LOCKED IT, then went to ask the guy in the club to open the gates to where he could park the van to unload it, came back and it had gone. Obviously unexpected in broad daylight mid afternoon. I think it was a planned thing but that goes unproven as of yet.
