I believe a forumite on here owns that bass, but no it's not an EBMM product, it's an aftermarket part that you can fit to any bass i think, though i forget what it's called.

I put one of those on my Sterling HS and it sounds awesome with flats. You can engage it to lightly or firmly mute your strings. It's pretty cool.

How does it fit on the instrument, does it require drilling and screwing down or is it designed to click in place with the existing design?

The idea is pretty neat, it looks so good I thought it was an official product but if the fitting of it would need an irreversible butchering of such a sacred temple, then I would personally steer away.

Thanks for clarifying.

You got shafted? That sucks man, what happened?
I'm looking for a nice 4 at the moment, got my eye on a bongo in a shop near me, but i'm thinking maybe a ray or something, it's confusing! They're all so good! I've got to sell two of my basses anyway before i can make my mind up.

As for the mute, i think you can use sticky pads to stick it to the bass, or (as you can see in the photo) there's a tiny little screw at each side of the mute assembly.

It has adhesive, so it sticks very well in place right up against the bridge. It also includes mounting screws but that is unneccsary and I would never put holes in my bass. I will try to upload a photo of it later on.

I had no problem putting holes in my bass. :D

This Bongo will never leave.

Plus, I bought my BassMute used, and tried it on a couple of different basses before it ended up on the sapphire black 5. Since I already had a couple of tiny holes on the bass from when I had it set up as a VBass Borg Bongo (the tiny black screw next the knobs is actually filling a VBass screw hole and isn't holding the BassMute on there), I had no problem screwing the mute on there. The two screws for the BassMute are hidden. I have a growing collection of mutilated pickguards to go there, too.

If I am able to swing a 25th Anniversary bass, it'll be getting a BassMute added to it assuming there is enough room between the bottom pickup and the bridge. But, I won't be putting any extra screw holes on that one--it'll just get the adhesive tape.

I love my BassMute. But, they aren't cheap at all.

I checked out the website.

This looks like a cool product for bringing out the 'old school' vibe.

You are right about 'not cheap'...US$123.90 + shipping for the 5-banger.

Yeah, I paid a little more than half of that for my used one. But, I will gladly pay the full price for a second one in chrome for the 25th Ann bass.

Some foam under the strings work too, but of course then you don't get to a) drill holes or use adhesive on your bass and b) won't have the pleasure of spending $100+ on a gadget;-)

the I'm just sayin'...

I´ve dedicated a whole BASS for this purpose and fitted foam under the string down by the bridge. A whole bass is way more expensive than a Bassmute and the drawback is that you can´t switch to a muted sound and then back again all within a song.

I´ve been thinking about getting a couple of Bassmute´s and fit flats on a bass instead so I can get a muted sound on both flatwounds and roundwonds. The ideal thing would be to get 5 (!!) Bassmutes and fit them on my fretted and fretless 4- and 5-string SR´s and a 4-string with flats.....

I´m kind of a sucker for muted bass sounds and a Bassmute seem very flexible. The ones here that uses one, are there any drawbacks? Is it sturdy built? Do you have a feeling that it might break in the future or is it rigid? Would be great to know. Thanks.

Sincerely//J :)

Sure, a piece of foam under the strings gets the same sound. But, try putting it in right before the only part of the song that has a dubby bass sound for a breakdown and out before the guitar solo. And, over a four hour gig, I might use it for every other song sometimes for a set or two. Do you really want to put that in and take it out after every single song for four hours? Does your band want to wait while you do it? Are you able to get it in the exact same spot every time?

I can adjust the amount of mute for each string. Which is very handy when you piezos in the bridge. Try that with a hunk of foam.

I've played over 200 gigs with the bass mute. I have really come to love the sound. That works out to about 35 cents a gig. The cost of a guitar pick. A new one would be about 60 cents a gig.

With the 3 way switch, I can have my normal mute and then have everything adjust to a super mute to achieve different effects. Try using two different pieces of foam in one song. Good luck! I play in a trio with a guitar player who uses no effects, and there are no backup singers. So, I change the bass tone around from modern to quick decay tub with the flip of a switch.

Besides--I spent a lot of money on the Bongo. I love the way it looks. I spent a lot of money on a strap that complements it. Why would I go and throw a hunk of foam next to the bridge? I wouldn't duct tape my strap to the bass, either.

Here's their website:

The BassMute - An innovative muting device for the Bass Player

Everything the say is true, and accurate. I think they sell direct now, and I haven't ordered one from them. But, if I remember correctly, it was only when Fodera had the exclusive distributorship in America was there ever a problem. Apparently, when your basses cost $12000, you don't bother to return calls on $130 aftermarket parts.

You'll also notice that they say screw installation is not recommended. The only reason I used them was because the V Bass Pickup had them installed. Otherwise, I would have just used the adhesive. I certainly wouldn't screw one into the Dargie or the 25th Anniversary, that's for damn sure.

If there is one song/one gig you use a mute, a piece of foam will probably do the trick. This makes a lot more sense to me than buying a $300 boutique hand wired point-to-point tube overdrive.

Here's a picture of my Sterling with the Bassmute. To answer your question Hellboy, it is very solid and I couldn't imagine it breaking because its design is simple. I have no drawbacks with it. It helps capture an oldschool tone well.

Great thank you for your answer. Very kind. Interesting gadget, indeed. I´ll contact the manufacturer and ask a few questions. Again, thank you for your answer.
