Hey all,

I'm a "non-slapper" who uses my StingRay and StingRay 5 for country gigs. I've gotten some weird looks, but personally I think StingRays are great for fingerstyle country. Why are StingRays always stereotyped as a "slap" bass?
I just don't get it...

not weird at all! I use my stingray for all sorts (granted i don't play country! but some folk on here do), they're versatile tools, not just slap machines :)

Same kind of small thinking that some have that you can only play "real" Jazz with an upright or if you must use an electric, it can only be a F3nd3r Jazz-Bass. Silly preconceptions to be ignored. Use your Stingrays and leave them scratching their empty heads.

I play decidedly throwback country and western swing on a Bongo. Anyone says 'boo' to me is gonna get an ass-kickin'.

shouldn't matter what kind of bass you're playing for whatever style of music as long as it sounds like you want it to
for Musicman basses, they've got a lot of tonal variety with their EQ so they can play any style. Heck, most basses can get away with playing any style.

If you were playing a Warlock in a country band, then maybe you'd have a problem.

I figure the "slap bass" image is because of the fact it simply kills for that technique, from early on. But that is only ONE of the many faces an SR is capable of. I've used a Sterling for bluegrass and once they get over it being 'lectric it kills!:D

I play country all the time on Stingrays. I will be playing my new Big Al at a country gig on Saturday.

Stingray + Flats = Bad Ass Country Player.

I played mine a couple of times for some fill in country gigs. They loved it. I've also used it for a couple of Johnny Cash Tribute gigs when I couldn't bring the upright and they loved it too.

I used to be in the camp of playing a specific bass for a specific style. I think it came from being an engineer and going for specific tones on records. I have come to realize that at least for me the Ray is the "TONE" that I hear in my head and I can ONLY get it from a real Ray! Therefore I only own and play Stingrays now. I would like to think that people hire me because of my ability AND my tone and the tone I have and use is the Ray tone. I have never had anyone tell me that they did not like my tone. I am fighting the "hey we need that B string" battle a bit lately though. I currently play in a show band that plays a very wide variety of stuff and admittedly the B is all over the stuff we do so I can't really say anything when they tell me that. I am a 4 player at heart but I have been playing 5's for quite some time now. I have seen a lot of EBMMs out on the circuit and 2 of my favorite bass players out there are both using SR5s which is what I am using as well...I play some country and both of the other guys do as well...Works like a charm as far as I am concerned!

Peace,

T
