I know BP had a thread about fire & safety with his car, but this just makes me want to reiterate.

To start the evening off on the right foot, I got out of the pharmacy at 7, and went over to Store #2 to jam with one of the guys for a bit. While I am there, I get a call on my cell "Pete, it's Dad. There is a small fire next-door and I'm evacuating inventory. The tenants are all out, everyone is safe, but the whole block is shut down" (Background info - On the location of DuBaldo Music Center, we share a building with 2 other businesses, and upstairs there are 3 apartments)

It turns out that the middle store had an electrical fire (ballast/old wiring) that brought in 4 fire trucks, enough police cruisers to shut down the block, and warranted an evac of all our high-end products before the firehoses came out.

Fortunately everyone was fine, and the damage was roughly contained to a 10x10 foot area on the ceiling of the comic book store next door to us. We did suffer minor damage to 2 sections of our ceiling where the FD went through to make sure the fire hadn't come across our wall.

Check the batteries in your smoke detectors, and make sure your fire extinguishers are fully charged. Make sure your electrical system is up to date! The only thing that saved the whole place from going up was the quick cutting of the power and usage of a fire extinguisher by the owner of the comic book store.

We are all VERY grateful that no-one was injured.

Fortunately (?) I will be at the music store full-time in just a few weeks, so that will give me plenty of time to go over the property and make sure everything is up to code.

Many of our high-end instruments (violins/accordions/EBs) were in the back room in boxes/cases while the entry level stuff was out front in the rooms that suffered slight damage. My father was able to safely & quickly evac most of them before I showed up - I don't know that they all made it out unscathed, we had a few on display out front that I haven't had the chance to inspect yet.

I will be buying another fire extinguisher for my place tomorrow morning.

Geez Pete, I'm glad you guys are all okay. There was a fire 5 houses down from my grandmother's house yesterday that had 4 diff. fire departments out and 4 blocks shut down. That stuff can be truly devastating. Glad nobody got hurt.

Great news, Pete. I'm glad everything turned out ok.

This is one of my biggest fears... We change the batteries in the detectors every year around this time while housecleaning for the holidays. Even though I have insurance, once everyone is outside I often wonder how I would go about trying to save the guitars. Which would be the first to go... Don't wanna go there. Fire is bad stuff.

Ditto here. I use up the "probably still good" 9V batteries I take out of the detectors in my EBMMs and my pedals....the non-mission critical / non-crew safety stuff :)

Glad you, your family and the shop are okay. That was indeed a close one.

Do you guys own the apartments upstairs too? Having never traveled on the east coast, I find it odd how many different shops/apartments etc..can be cramned in together---you have to put a lot of trust in your neighbors I guess. Do you think all the wiring will be ripped out and replaced?

Thanks guys, close calls are never fun.

Yes we do; the property is ours, apartments included. We had an 8:00 meeting with the building inspector and my cousin Don who owns D. DuBaldo Electric, and we discussed what needed to be done. Some of the existing wiring needs to be replaced, and many of the fixtures need to be tended to. We will also be going overboard with smoke detectors. Everything should be completed by this evening or tomorrow morning.

Safety first :D

Glad no one was hurt and the shop came out of it relatively unscathed. Might be a good time to check your insurance is up to scratch and, as you say, invest in some additional detectors/ extinguishers.

Have a fair bit of experience in dealing with fire alarms/ extinguishers/ sprinklers/ insurance etc from my last job - headache inducing stuff ensuring the relevant regs are met but ultimately worth it. Where I used to work I had to test the sprinkler and fire alarm every week and keep a record in a fire proof safe. That way I had proof that I'd taken all necessary precautions if we did have a fire and needed to claim on the insurance. Heard all kinds of horror stories about insurance companies looking for the smallest loophole to avoid paying out...

Wow, glad everything worked out ok.

I've been involved in three house fires. We had a defective chimney when I was a kid and it started two fires (successfully sued the builder to fix it). Quick thinking by my dad saved us. And the last one ... I accidentally started with oil on the stove when I was in university. Half of the house when up.

Suffice it to say I'm scared as hell about fires and have a smoke detector + extinguisher every few feet in my house ...
