the stingray is the most balanced instrument i have ever experienced. it was the prime reason why this instrument has a long history with me, contrary to my other old basses.

Only the left-handed StingRays are neck heavy. Everyone knows that lefty instruments are unbalanced - just look at the way they point - it's all wrong! Also, an important thing to remember is that left-handed necks weigh more. The bodies are about the same, but the left handed wood for the necks weighs LOTS more than the body does. The extra mass of the left-hand thread tuners is negligible. If the 6-string Bongo is offered in a lefty, then and only then will you need to worry about balance.

Welcome to the forum!

It's gotta be true if you heard it on the internet!

Pete, you are one funny guy, but you are correct to a point.

All lefties are blessed with much larger brains and that means more weight, which does cause fatigue of the neck and is often referred to as “neck dive”. I actually have a size 8 head.

Cannot say I have ever noticed any of my EB's being neck heavy. I have some beasts for 5 strings as far as weight, but they seem well balanced to me. By the way, I am one of the odd ones that likes a heavier bass for the tone. True, a 4 hour gig wears a bit, but I feel it is worth it for the compliments I get regarding my tone.

Nobody liked my "Burning Troll"? I was proud of that one....

I loved it. Fell out of my seat.

Of course, I was happy to become a Troll for joining the forum and playing MMs. ... then again, I am a bit warped. :p

I do question the intentions of a persons first or second post that is inciting and wrong. It may not be the persons intention but it makes me smell burning troll. These two are on the heels of the whole DD/Pit fiasco so Im on red alert.

Hey BP, just FYI, he isn't a troll. I know him through other boards, and he is just an opinionated but experienced guy. No link to that other thing you referenced.

Still never found a neck heavy MM though.

I'd swear my Dargie bongo 5 is made with something besides basswood.
It feels heavier than my 3 previous bongos but its balanced and comfortable.

My Bongo 5 must be neck heavy. Every time I stand it up without a stand it falls over.:D

OK first off the concern of the bongo 6 being neck heavy is valid. It is called a design challenge/objective. The photos you saw were a bass that was head heavy because we arent concerned with that right now....soon but not now. The bongo six will probably have smaller and lighter tuning keys, will proabably be made of something other than bass wood and most likely have a mahong tone block.

I do question the intentions of a persons first or second post that is inciting and wrong. It may not be the persons intention but it makes me smell burning troll. These two are on the heels of the whole DD/Pit fiasco so Im on red alert.

Jack (jzucker) has been around for a while and is an author with Mel Bay. He's been looking for a narrow-spaced six-string for a while and has gone through a good amount of high-end basses looking for what he wants (Roscoe, Hanewinckel, Skjold, etc.). I know the Bongo 6 would be a potentially good choice for him as it looks to have fairly narrow string spacing and fairly narrow at the nut and 24th fret- a couple folks over at TalkBass suggested it may be a good bass for him when it comes out.

I've played a couple EBMMs that were a little neck-heavy, although the vast majority of what I've played have not been. Neck heavy is different thing to different people- those used to Fender-style, larger headstocks, etc., might not find a bass to be neck heavy when someone else finds it to be greatly so. Jack's mentioned in the past that he, as I do, likes a bass that will stay at a 45 degree angle without having to have a super-sticky strap to hold it there. I've played (and owned) basses like this. If a bass tips a bit below that, many might not think it is neck heavy- for some it is (some might not even know better- I met a guy with a 10lb five-string who thought it was light simply because he hadn't played enough different basses to find out otherwise :D ). I think that he is probably just making sure that a bass that could potentially be great for him would fit him in every aspect he's looking for where some other basses have fallen short.

Bryant...Does a ramp help the balance?

JUST KIDDING!

You pal may be the greatest and I have no issues with him other than to think that being a author he may have phrased the question a little differently.......

On with the show!

Well my Stingray is perfectly balanced. In fact, every 'Ray I've ever played was perfectly balanced. Its one of the many things I love about the bass.
