Two early songs that did this for me were:

1) Elvis Presley - Hound Dog. I was 5 or so the first time I heard that song. I was changed forever. That song made me want to be Elvis. I remember seeing the Live In Hawaii thing in 1970. I was 4. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

2) Kiss - I Stole Your Love. The way the intro riff fades in. I had been given and AM/FM 8-track player when I was 12. I had Love Gun on 8 track and I'd listen to that album in bed at night. You couldn't skip tracks so I had to wait till the tape would loop so I could hear it again.

That's a great progression. One of my fav moments is the intro to "That Time of the Night" which begins immediately after "Warm Wet Circles". Some of the best 'moody' music I can recall.. the pulsating bass & drums, bursts of guitar solo, airy synth chords... and great lyrics..

"it was a wedding ring.. destined to be found in a cheap hotel,
lost in a kitchen sink, or thrown in a wishing well"

yep the rythm in 5/4 is just perfectly right for this transition ...

"If I had enough money, I'd buy a round for that boy over-there..."

Comfortably Numb the song combined with the imagery from the film definitely hits one of my buttons.

History, by The Verve The intro to that knocks me out every time.

Sugar Mice, Marrillion The imagery brought on by the lyrics, combined with a solo that has real power (in my mind).

These are just the first three that popped into my head.

Oh, The Waterfall?, Enio Morricone From "The Mission"

Paris, Texas Ry Cooder

I love playing that solo! My bass player and I like to jam that song when the other band members are taking a break.

More Marillion...

Neverland from the Marbles album just kills me every time I hear it. It's just fantastic all the way through but when it gets to the vocals with loads of repeats towards the end its just nuts. And my word does Rothery have great TONE on that track or what.

Quartz from Anoraknophobia also has a few hair-raising moments.

"With My Own Two Hands" by Ben Harper

there's others, but thats just the first one that came to mind

I'm with ya- love Ben Harper.

One that does it for me is "Where Were You" by Jeff Beck off Guitar Shop. Haunting tones.

I haven't listend to that one in years, but that is definitely on my list.

A few others:

"The Forgotten", Joe Satriani off Flying in a Blue Dream

The solos in "Desert Rose" (the main solo is etherial, the ride out channels Jimi) by Eric Johnson off Ah Vai Musicom

So many with Steve Morse I can't name one over the others

Larry Carlton's intro to "Don't Take Me Alive", Steely Dan (Royal Scam album, I think?)

Excellent thread!

Oh yeah that's another one !!
" cos we ended as lovers" by Jeff Beck.

Mr Big by Free - just as the bass solo is coming to a climax and paul Rogers comes in - Kossoff driving it all along rather than the bass - awesome !!

Won't get fooled again by The Who - Just as Daltrey comes in with the big scream at the end and the song finishes in a series of power chords

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen - just when the guitar solo comes in

Shivery !!!!!

Edit - I shiver a lot !! :D

Queen often do it for me, especially now we are 'Freddie-less'.:(

The start of Innuendo as the opening to the We Will Rock You musical. The recorded voice of Fred singing wit the band and the cast gives me the shivers as does the start of Bo Rap played on the TV/video towards the end of the show. It starts out tinny and small through the TV on stage and then grows and expands into the PA. Huge!

Also, the massive Mellotron opening to Genesis Watcher Of The Skies. Play this loud through a great hi-fi. Fantastic! Also Steve Hackett's solo section during Firth Of Fifth. Still hoping for a reprise of this in '08!

Dream Theater doing The Spirit Carries On With Theresa Thompson either on the Live Scenes DVD or live at Hammersmith on the last tour.

Spirit Of Radio / Rush. This is my favourite song to play live - ever. I am in two bands both of which cover it. In fact I refuse to gig without playing it! Genius.

Peter Gabriel playing Father Son at the end of the Growing Up Live DVD. Makes me well up every time thinking about my now departed Dad. Here Comes The Flood comes pretty close too.

Similarly, Eva Cassidy singing Over The Rainbow. What a loss!

Paul Rogers singing pretty much anything.

The whole of Dark Side Of The Moon from start to finish.

Zeppelin - No Quarter

Oooh must go and dig some music out!

I'm on board for Yes' Shoot High, Aim Low and Jeff Beck's 'Cause We Ended as Lovers
Also, Robert Plant's Ship of Fools, because Doug Boyle rocks with clean tone.
Robin Trower's Secret Place, and outro solo for Day of the Eagle
Anything off of Morse's High Tension Wires
Mr. Big's Shine (with Kotzen)
Paul Gilbert's Let the Computer Decide
Vinnie Moore's Move That Thang
and Sheryl Crow's Favorite Mistake, because I like slapback echo.

There's something about that Seal song, I dunno, the melody... I feel the same way about it.

Have you heard Jack Black (Tenacious D) do a rendition of it? Friggin' hilarious.
