In a weird way I like how the gloss gives it more substance, you get the sense it will stay in tune for years... especially with the Ebony

New strings going on this tonight...

I love how this thing can get warm round tone, now I gotta do a little coxing to get the aggressive tones. My expectations were that I'd have a harder time getting warm tones.... so I'm going to regroup & approach this a different way

BUT I still want that Sterling HH 5 PDN

When I had the 5 HH 25th, it was pretty aggressive. I would definitely try it with strings you are used to before making any decisions.

So I'm not crazy here... all the clips I've ever heard of this bass were aggressive... Kekos, Ed Friedlands... so I can't wait to change strings today. I'm used to Super Slinkies & I can keep em on for years, really & still love em so I just didn't think it could be that big a deal... but maybe I'm dead wrong

Its ALIVE !!

Some pickup adjustments, new strings, new batteries, cleaning around the poles, neck adjustment back to regular gauge strings & viola, this thing purrs like a kitty! Damn !!

MUCH better all around, wow, what a difference. Some serious cool tones coming out of this bad boy. Its still warmer & punchier than my Sterling & Bongo. Still with rounded tone in the upper mids & treble which theres no bloody chance my Sterling can hit... and thats a refreshing change. I'm really looking forward to blasting this through the amp & cabs tomorrow.

Aggression is back baby but you can tell the high end wood is playing its part between the Ebony board & Mahogony tone block and it has a really high end tone, a punchy warm tone all its own. At first with the bad setup, new but worn down batteries, new but crummy strings and some odd pickup heights I was VERY thrown off from the tone I had in my head... A Sterling with a 4 band EQ... but with all things fixed, this is clearly its own Reflex tone as different as a Bongo is to a Sterling.

And its pretty damn cool

This is why I always tell people to change their strings and set up their guitar before they decide to keep or move it. I've been amazed at how much of a sound and feel difference can from from strings. This is how I discovered that I do NOT GET ALONG with Snake Oil strings AT ALL. I wanted to tear them off the guitar, they made it sound so dead.

Glad you're enjoying it, Tuna!

I had been using a much lower action and thinner strings for the past few months because that's what my gig required. Right now, I'm playing in a praise band with three guitar players (one acoustic, two electric) and neither of the electric guitarists are able to play lead (or not willing, whatever their reason may be). So most of the soloing in songs falls on me. In order to do some of it, I needed to lower the strings and change the string gauges. That meant for a lot of messing around with settings and what not.

But I'm glad you've gotten the bass set to your ear now. I really do hope that you enjoy it and continue to use it!

tunaman,

reflex is more "flat" or should I say don't need much to tweak with an EQ, ...I usually keep my bass EQ control knob in the center click position, it's all in the mahogany tone block and maple top, ..try to dial (boost) low and hi middle knobs to produce more aggressive tone if that's what bothers You?

Mahogany tone block and maple top gives You all bass and treble anyone needs, so reflex players are more focused to both mid controls, ..I even cut bass and treble sometimes (bad venues etc.)!

Enjoy to play the game with 16+ more (with an EQ) tone options!
