Off Topic Jazz III Eric Johnson picks...

I like the feel and attack of the reds, but want something with a little more reliable grip.

I applied a very thin washer to one side of my red JIII and I love it. I found the Ultex too large and I didn't like the feel of the black... I haven't tried the EJ's yet, but now that our distributor is finally in stock again, I might give them a test.

The Ultex Jazz III is the exact same shape as the normal one, as far as I can tell

I think the plastic may also be different. These EJ picks feel like an improved black jazz3 except... red.

Any chance Pete will carry these in bulk???? hint hint.....

Weird, I had Fender Mediums flying left and right out of my hand since forever. Since changing to Jazz III black around 6-8 months ago, I've dropped it once. Also no more problems with it turning around in my fingers, like the Fender did. Never would have expected that from a considerably smaller pick.

PS: Maybe I'm just not playing hard enough.

Sometimes I just slap some athletic tape on the pick for some grip.

Works wonders.

I am going to have to try these out. I have never tried the Jazz III picks in any color or material. I do love the traditional Dunlop Ultex though.

IMHO they are definitely worth a try. I wish I had more. I'm already on my second of only 3...

I just ordered some ultex Jazz III because I love the no slip feel of the ultex material.
But these EJ reds look cool too.

I use both regular reds and blacks, and I find myself defaulting on black, but the red allows me to hold back my attack giving a sweeter and smoother tone easier than it would be with the blacks.
But the blacks don't slip at all usually, so I love them.

Thing that gets me with these picks is that I always seem to lose them really quickly.

I have bought like at least 30 jazz IIIs in the past (5 x 6packs) and I could probably only find about 7 or 8 of them. They are quite elusive.

They can be hard to find at music stores because places inevitably carry "fender" and "gibson" stuff which is usually terrible.

However, you can find them in packs of 20 or so from some places, including Pete Dubaldo on this forum.

I did take some rough measurements with some dial calipers on the 4 styles of JIII's.
height- tip to crest of pick,
width- widest points left and right of the text
thickness- depth in non-text areas between obverse and reverse sides.

(measurements in fractions of an inch)

Red: .982 height, .852 width, .052 thickness
Ultex: 1.05 height, .882 width, .052 thickness
EJ: .992 height, .875 width, .050 thickness
Black: .991 height, .859 width, .051 thickness

Uh oh, EJ loses out on thickness compared to the other three. It's only .002 of an inch though, so.... I'll still give them a shot. Seems like the EJ's are just a slightly longer and wider version of the Reds.

so true... i hate dropping them. i usually keep my current pick in between the low E and the fretboard on the 1st fret... this way i don't have to search my pockets for that tiny pick and i'm ready to play once i grab my guitar out of the bag.
