Jeff Healey, arguably one of the most distinctive guitar players of our time, died today (Sunday March 2) in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto. He was 41, and leaves his wife, Cristie, daughter Rachel (13) and son Derek (three), as well as his father and step-mother, Bud and Rose Healey, and sisters Laura and Linda.
Funeral and memorial arrangements are pending.
Robbed of his sight as a baby due to a rare form of cancer, retino blastoma, and he started to play guitar when he was three, holding the instrument unconventionally across his lap. He formed his first band at 17, but soon formed a trio which was named the Jeff Healey Band.

After his appearance in the movie Road House, he was signed to Arista records, and in 1988 released the Grammy-nominated album See the Light, which included a major hit single, Angel Eyes. He earned a Juno Award in 1990 as Entertainer of the Year.
Two more albums emerged on Arista, with lessening success as the ’90s passed. Various “best-of” and live packages were released, and he recorded two more rock albums, before turning to his real love, classic American jazz from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s.
By then, however, Healey was an internationally-known star who had played with dozens of musicians, including B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and recorded with George Harrison. Mark Knopfler and the late blues legend, Jimmy Rogers.
A family man with a three-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter he preferred to stay close to home. “I’ve traveled widely before — been there and done that,” he told friends, determined to avoid the lengthy, exhausting tours that marked his life in his twenties and early thirties.
A long-running CBC Radio series saw him in the role of disc jockey — My Kinda Jazz was a staple for a while, but in recent years he had hosted a programme with a similar name on Jazz-FM in Toronto. A highlight of his broadcasts was always the use of rare — and rarely heard — music from his 30,000-plus collection of 78-rpm records.
As his rock career wound down as the millennium came, he recorded a series of three album of early jazz, playing trumpet as well as acoustic guitar in a band he called Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards. The most recent was It’s Tight Like That, recorded live at Hugh’s Room in Toronto in 2005, with British jazz legend Chris Barber as guest star.
At the time of his death he was about to see the release of his first rock/blues album in eight years, Mess of Blues, which is being released in Europe on March 20, and in Canada and the U.S. on April 22. The album was the result of a joint agreement between the German label, Ruf Records, and Stony Plain, the independent Edmonton-based label that has released his three jazz CDs.
Mess of Blues was recorded in studios in Toronto, with two cuts recorded at the Jeff Healey’s Roadhouse in Toronto and two at a concert in London England. The backup group on the upcoming CD — the Healey’s House Band — played with him regularly at the downtown Roadhouse, and at a previous club bearing his name in the Queen-Bathurst area.
Early last year, Healey underwent surgery to remove cancerous tissue from his legs, and later from both lungs; aggressive radiation treatments and chemotherapy, however, failed to halt the spread of the disease.
Despite his battle with cancer, he undertook frequent tours across Canada with both his blues-based band and his jazz group; he was set for a major tour in Germany and the U.K. and was to be a guest on the BBC’s famed Jools Holland Show in April.
Remembered by his musicians — and his audiences — for his wry sense of humour as well as his musical playfulness, Healey was a unique musician who bridged different genres with ease and assurance.

Whoa, that came out of nowhere....

I hadn't heard anything of his health issues, and I had even wondered recently what he had been doing musically, since he's kinda been out of the picture for awhile...

He really was a brilliant player.

I didn't know he was sick either ... that is so sad.

He was such a major talent. I've seen him on numerous occasions and always been so blown away by his energy and talent.

I know Sterling and Luke knew him (I've heard Luke tell some great stories about him), I'm so sad to hear the news.

Wow.......

I had the pleasure of playing with Jeff one special night.

Before the desert move I had a second house in LA...it was aout of town a bit and I would have parties that were pretty wild. ONe of them was a Hootenany......It was in Rodney Crowell's honor as he was visiting....It was the following:

John Ferraro, Jim Cox, Me, Luke, Albert, Jonny Lee schell, Meatloaf, T BOne Burnett, Will Jennings, jay Graydon, and Jeff Healy. Im forgetting a couple and there was famous irl singer but I cant recall.....

I sat next to Jeff and watched him like a hawk. I was blown away at how good he was and how deep he was.....everybody had to play a featured piece....Even me. I somehow pulled something out of my arse....the great thing is that Jeff was playing trumpet too and he played it out of the side of his mouth...I can play a little bit with the guitar on my lap and took a solo next to jeff after the song he complimented me and the cats told him that I was playing it on ,y lap in tribute....

When the night was over Lukey was a little gassed and I remember thankin g Jeff for walking luke to his car.....He busted out laughin and thats the last I saw of him....With a smile

Luke is going to be shattered....he loved him and would make pilgrimages to Toronto to do gigs at Jeff's club. I remember Luke inviting Alexander Mogilny to the club when he was with the LEAFS....Luke knew Alex played hockey but had no idea that he was a celeb and the little club went kind of nuts when Alex and his wife came in.

This is juswt another on the greats that I have been fortunate to come in contact with....As I get older there are more dead ones than ones alive

Wow....I am TRULY bummed. :( Jeff was a great talent, and he will be missed. Strange - I just watched Roadhouse again a couple of days ago, and have been thinking about him a lot lately.

Several years ago, Jeff came to the Burlington area to play a 'blues cruise' on Lake Champlain. Although I missed the show, I heard from friends that after the cruise Jeff came back to a local club called Nectars and hung out and jammed with the local crowd until all hours of the night. He sounded like a total class act.

RIP...
Mike

Jeff Healey dead?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!... Damn...

I am truely saddened by this. He was the FIRST blues guitarist I ever got into, and is stil one of the few I really follow, album after album. He is definately a player that means so much more to me compared to others like SRV etc etc, mainly because I GREW UP listening to Jeff Healey... His latest album "Get Me Some" was easily the best he did since "See The Light", and I was looking forward so much to a follow up. I had hoped to see him live one day... Damn damn damn... I'll miss his music, his playing, and that amazing tone... Goodbye Jeff... I'll miss you for sure...

Sh*t... I'm going to go sulk for the rest of today...

Wow. I hadn't heard any news about the man for...well...I can't remember how long it's been. Probably, the last I heard of his activities was over 15 years ago. Very talented guy, obviously.

How truly sad. :( I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Healy when he sat in during a jam set with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, and SRV at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. After EC's set, we watched the crew change a few things around and place a chair on the stage and then the lights went out. When they came back on, Jeff Healy was sitting in the chair surrounded by the other 3 and EC's band. I can't remember what they played but I do remember when it came time for Jeff to solo he stood up and just smoked.

One day later, SRV would die in a helicopter crash.

Now Jeff is gone. :(

Rob, thanks for posting this news. I was out for most of the evening and didn't get a chance to watch the news. Just checking the online news now.

I'm quite shocked and saddened by the news. Didn't even know he was battling cancer. Such a loss of an extremely talented man. It's great to see how much respect he had from the music world. He will be missed.

P.S. BP, thanks for sharing that story of You, Jeff and Lucious.
