what should John have done instead? how much say do you suppose he had in the matter?

Well, if you watch the show regularly, I guess you would understand more. I don't know if I can explain it. He just didn't seem all that inspired to play much. I think it's farking stupid they're not allowed to play "copyrighted material." It's just that with a player of this magnitude, I had the expectation of going to commercial break with my jaw on the floor every time. That never happened. Obviously, I wasn't the only one who felt that way here.

I don't understand what you mean by "how much say" he had. As long as it's not a copyrighted song, he can do what he wants. You think anyone was going to tell some monster guy with a giant beard what he could and couldn't do?

They can play anything they want but they have to pay for it. My band did a reality TV show. We had to keep a record of every song we played so that if a scene was aired with us playing, even in the background, VH1 could pay for the rights.

I agree about being able to play bits of copyrighted material. i would have enjoyed hearing what johns choice of rush tune would have been when he said he was so tempted to play one (any guesses? i would guess xanadu, la villa strangiato or natural science)

about "how much say": Im just curious with things like this about how it all works: did they contact john and say "hey we want you on the show, and you will do X with Y gear in timespots a, b and c" or what...I imagine the logistics could get pretty complicated, even if it was just something like having a cd of backing tracks from his solo album.

It was cool to see JP on there. If you watch the show regularly most guitar guests just improvise something going into the commercial breaks. I would much rather have seen JP do that every single time instead of playing snipets from his solo material. JP is amazing at improv so I would have loved to just see him wing it, just let it fly and see what comes out like most guitar guests do. Oh well.

It was a nice segment, it was nice to see JP talk about his equipment!

To be frank, I was really underwhelmed by what John did on the show. I was really disappointed. Otherwise, the show was fantastic. Geddy was a great guest.
you gotta be kidding...yeah, he started out a bit slow, but pretty much all the riffs were in the RUSH vein. I'm sure Geddy was thinking, "Damn, that would sound great on our next CD". I was impressed.

only thing I was dissapointed by was the reaction when the kid got a free Sterling hat. So he was clueless to the company, but it just seemed ungrateful...until he got that kick-ass guitar.
