I had never heard of Hiland before this thread. Went to YouTube and checked him out - WOW. Interesting player and looks like an equally interesting person. Appears to have a nascent blues/rock side that he is developing, no better guitar than an EBMM for that! Look forward to seeing/hearing his development with EBMM.

Great to see him playing a Silo and I look forward to hearing what he does with it. I can't believe more don't play these. The Silo/Silo Special are ergonomic perfection.

There is a ridiculous amount of birdseye on my 20th Silhouette. :D

Both my Silos have got great birds eye maple necks.....my dad has two of them as well and one has birds eye maple, the other is a really old Silo with the 6 bolt neck joint and that is a plain maple neck with a rosewood board.

I thought all (newer/newish) Silo's had birds eye maple necks......is this not the case?

By the way - heard Johnny Hiland at Music Live when no one knew who the hell he was......he just turned up at a stand and just rocked - a great addition to the MM roster!

My wife's Silhouette doesn't have birdseye at all. Doesn't affect the playability or feel, though. Still a killer guitar.

As the EBMM lineup has expanded and the availability of birdseye maple has contracted they've been using the plain maple for the Silos and Silo Specials and saved the birdseye for the other models.

I've had 2 Silo Specials - a 2004 and a 2007 - both with plain maple necks, so I guess the switchover happened before November 2004 when my first Silo Special was produced. I suspect my 2010 will be plain as well. And I can guarantee there is no birdseye at all on my recently acquired Axis SS, just rosewood goodness ;)
