Man I can't believe what I saw over at the John Petrucci forums, people were using all kinds of foul language, which is one thing, however they were trashing John and his wife...I guess there's no Mod over there!
No respect!

I haven't been to that forum in a while, l can't believe people are trashing JP, and even his wife, what right do they have to do that, they don't know him, they don't know his wife. You're right Raz, some people just just don't knwo how to saw respect.

Scott.

P.S. just to go off topic, l was listening to a Zakk Wylde interview the other day, and Zakk gave JP the best compliment, "John Petrucci should be shot on site, he's that good, he makes the rest of us look bad, the skill level that JP is at makes me believe that there is a god, cause no one could be that good without the hand of god touching them" it was something close to that anyway.

The "General Music Chat" section of that board has gone 180* from what it was when I joined 3-4 years ago. There used to be some phenominal musicians regularly posting tips, practice ideas, community lesson threads, and more CLIPS than you can imagine! I have about 50 different subdirectories on this 'puter of mp3 downloads from that site, all categorized by author.

Just to name a few of the "old time" regular posters who don't post hardly ever any more....

John Petrucci - (doesn't post anymore even though his wife does, but still reads the board - as mentioned in the LAB dvd)
Michael Angelo Batio - (newer member, but who he is needs no explanation!)
TheOtherBumblefoot - Ron Thal ... yeah, thats right, Ron Thal.
Chris Brooks - (phenominal guitarist... from Aussieland, IIRC)
Chris Ptacek - (theory genious & never afraid to speak his mind)
Ian Griffeths - (monster 17yr old shredder in Germany, everything from JP to Bach to 8 finger tapping arrangements)
Danny Joe Carter - (shred speed psossibly 2nd place only to M.A.B. and a heckuva nice guy!)
FatMrCrab - (idunno his real name, but he is an amazing player I remember from days long ago!)

and many many more were regular visitors to the forum.... The quality of the posts in that section has deteriorated so much that I rarely check anything there, and just peruse the "Gear Talk" section every so often. It's sad to see what was once a mecca for learning go so far in the other direction.

Yes, it is moderated, but with the new board format that arrived a month or so ago, the profanity filter got turned off. It seems that there are a bunch of 12yr old kids with giant guitar-shredder-e-kox on that board who enjoy nothing more than trying to present themselves as tough......

Ah well, it's certainly a ton of fun on this board :)

Pete...ya done dragged me into this...btw I'm TheOrangeChannel over there amongst other places...

I just find nothing useful over there anymore...just a bunch of tools panning the new DT stuff, and a different bunch of tools on the tech side either having the same EBMM Vs Ibanez blah blah blah discussion (BC Rich usually wins) or whining about their trems not returning to pitch and then not following my advice...I rarely post there anymore...RARELY. Became a huge waste of time....then again we're musicians. We shouldn't be posting ANYWHERE....we shold be PRACTICING and innovating instead of bitching about what we didn't like about our favorite artists records or why we're disappointed that they didn't record what WE wanted them to do...

Rant over.

Seacrest out!

I'm the mod there, but I can't read 100% of the posts as it's a board that moves pretty quickly. Busy messageboards go in cycles of good-bad-good etc. That doesn't mean I'm happy with its current state, but it doesn't mean that it's terrible either. Chris Ptacek and Chris Brooks both still post there and Bumblefoot has just been VERY busy lately, although he did post there this week. Besides, he has his own forum now and that has become more of a forum focus for him. You need to check out Harmony Central boards or some other band's boards like Megadeth's to see some amazingly rude and pointless nonsense. It's hard to find anything worthwhile between all the political and bashing threads. I truly regret all the stuff I miss when moderating, but I don't think it's as horrible as some might believe. As those who know me can attest to, I'm quite strict and quick with the delete button if I see something over the top.

Paul does a heck of a job moderating, but I still believe the board has gone to the dogs. Most of the posters are nasty and infantile and I don't bother posting over there anymore. If im gonna "waste my time" reading and posting on a forum, I'll stick to hanging with you guys on the EBMM forum.

With that said, I refuse to post there anymore. Simply, you have a bunch of keyboard commanders who have nothing better to do since they out grew The Nickelodean Channel. I used to post there....until peeps got stupid. I refuse to battle with idiots on the forums. I usually don't let them get to me, but, when they do, the hammer gets dropped. Hate to see you having a hard time over there, but, I quit posting many many months ago. OC was constantly giving out advice only to have the same guys question it.

JP is one of my guitar heroes. I do not know him personally but do not see any reason to bash him (or his family) like those on the JP forum. You bash my family, I WILL find you and then I WILL make it painful. Unfortunately for JP, he would get sued by these no ball idiots. Pathetic that forum is......

I'm sad to see people think that of the forum when I sincerely try hard to keep it clear of people breaking the rules. I can't ban people who dislike JP's playing and decide to post negative things about it. Dissent is always welcome and unfortunately, JP has a huge fanbase that includes some of the most nitpicky people on the planet. Some of them have nothing better to do than post negative things about good players. But that alone isn't breaching the forum rules. I certainly am going to try to improve it more, because giving up and leaving as others have done isn't an option. I've always been of the opinion that if you like a place, it's incumbent upon you to contribute in a positive fashion instead of packing the bags and leaving it to go downhill. Letting the jerks win, so to speak, is the worst thing to do. Although, I understand that some people don't want to try and would rather just go elsewhere. But seriously, check out Dream Theater's site - JP's is NOTHING compared to what goes on there most of the time with kids yelling at each other. This is all interesting to read though as I'm probably going to embark on a major cleanup of JP's forum in many respects. It's already begun actually... :)

Sorry Paul, I wasn't out to question you're modding skills, I was just hurt when I read the one thread, and it was only the one...

You're not kidding! I stumbled upon it after getting Octavrium, just to see what others thought. I have never seen a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than I did on those DT forums. I was there once and I will NEVER go back. Just sad, really.

Paul, I've always had a great level of respect for you and the way you handle moderating. Unfortunately, I have to echo the sentiments here. I don't think the problem is the moderation, as I've said, I always thought you did a great job. Sadly, however, a forum is only as good as it's weakest members. Even though some don't break the rules that doesn't mean that they are helping either.

I posted over there just a little while back, and was completely on topic with the thread, the next thing I know I've got some guy who doesn't know anything about me calling me out as a fanboy. I make a pro Ernie Ball Musicman comment and I get blasted for being a JP clone.

I would say the general attitude over there is probably the biggest problem. That is going to be very difficult for you to "moderate" unfortunately. I still check the board every day and I still post from time to time. In all honesty the time I spend there now is more due to the fond memories I have from when the board was like home to me. I haven't completely left, I just spend my time in other more "friendly" places.

The amount of mis information and flaming in the gear section is staggering however. I hope you do clean it up and restore the reputation it has. I remember when I first started out the JP forum was one of, if not the, very best places to get gear tips on the entire net.

I wish you luck, old friend!

Paul, I hope you did not take my comments as a slight towards you. I know to mod a forum, especially on that big is tough. I just simply elected to not get into a pissing contest with those there. I have enough real life problems that would make those youngins cry for their mommy and this is on a daily basis. However, I hope you can reign in on those who have no control over themselves and fix what I thought was a decent board not too long ago. As for what OC said....you need help, it can be provided.

Yeah I think we can all agree, it's more the group that needs to mod itself...I can't imagine being a mod!
