So many options, so much confusion. It's one of those things where I wonder if I should wait another year until I can afford the higher end models, or with my inexperience will the features of the nicer models be lost on me?

I also worry about my ability to keep my weight down with a such a device in the backyard.:D

LOL dont worry about the weight, we grill/smoke all the time almost every day it all depends on choice of meats how you perpare them and what you serve with it, we basically do a modified Atkins diet, small to medium portion of meat, salad and or vegetables grilled or steamed, if it wasnt for my love of beers I would be super fit:D

Ok, that's good to know. I love the website, it is a really nice well designed site, I wish it had an option for side by side comparison. I'm not sure what features I need and which ones a novice can do without. I'm looking at the Memphis Select and thinking, "should I just save up for Pro model"?

Getting the bug is a good thing. On Friday I smoked a chicken (Big Bob Gibson's white sauce chicken) and ate half of it before bringing it into the kitchen it was so good. Then last night I smoked up 3lbs of hot sausage, after which point I felt ambitious and smoked 2 pork loins!

For those of you on the fence about what to order, call the Hotline for Big Poppa Smokers and they will guide you. Toll-free 877-828-0727

I went with the Memphis Pro and it is awesome.

If any of you are local to me and want to try out some smoked food from the Memphis, hit up my stag this weekend.....

OK here is the deal...first off you have to decide what you want to cook the most. Grill? Smoke? Roast?
THen you decide if you want to use charcoal or wood pellets. The wood pellets impart a fantastic flavor and are carbon neutral and have no direct flame so you cannot burn the food.

The Primo is cool in that you can do everything on it...it requires technique and you need to be a little careful with it as it is ceramic and can crack.
Unfortunately there are no usa made grills that can smoke that are under $600.00
The Meadow Creek pr36 is a versitile cooker but I have yet to smoke on it but I know you can. These are made in the Amish country of PA. The portable kitchen is a fun little unit but it small and Im not sure about smoking...great for grilling and roasting.

The Memphis select is great but if you live in a colder climate you may be temp limited in the winter to get to its high of 550. (and your pellet consuption will be somewhat higher. The Memphis Advantage is a great unit and gets to 600....the pro is the cats PJ's
The MAK is a great unit too.

Thanks for the info Sterling. So it sounds like those of us on the East Coast who are looking at the Memphis line should be going with the advantage or the pro since our winters are certainly cold. I guess now I just need to have a conversation with the Mrs.

Though my folks just bough a 2nd home in Vermont and my dad said he wanted to some help picking out a grill, hmmmmm.

It's a date! - I'll bring the meat! - How far north you coming?

North of Glasgow, South of Aberdeen, West of Ben Nevis (I think it's fairly near there. Place might be called Crief? ) Not sure, it's all being arranged for me and I'm doing as I'm told!!!

Back to the grilling/smoking topic, I'm going to be doing a boned leg of lamb on Saturday, with a lime, corriander and chilli marinade.
