Hey guys
i just received a MYSTIC DREAM JP i think its about 2001 i dont no to much about the pickups But i know He uses a D-sonic now in the bridge
Are the D-sonic a better sounding pickup or should i keep it they way it is?
Keep in mind i use only EMG 81s in all my guitars
so maybe if there is a passive pickup thats similar to the EMG could someone direct me in the right direction cheers
:confused::D

The DiMarzio D-Activator and the D-Activator X are passive pickups specifically engineered to sound like an active pickup. I don't know how true that is because I've never played any of those. If you go to the DiMarzio site you can hear sound samples of many of their models, including the D-Activator.

Hey if you do try the D-Activator X set, record a demo or a clip! I've been wondering about those for an alternate pickup set to my silhouette. BTW I loved your tone on the last Teramaze video that was in the other thread, I wanted to check it out again but it's not up anymore :(

You always been quite an advocate of the Luke 1. I know they are two very different guitars, but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts about the JP in comparison?

Sorry, if it's too dramatic a hijac.. But i'm actually really keen to hear what you think?

okay Drgonz
here it is ! to be honest the Luke is a Much classier guitar the feel of the wood through the body and the luke neck is just personally the best But im finding it a little difficult bonding with the jp neck, its just so thin But it sounds great
this is only my opinion of having the jp for 2 days and playing Lukes for 10 years so it could change.
But to be honest I still think the Luke is the most well rounded guitar ebmm have produced..
cheers
p.s i love the neck pickup sound on the jp better than the Luke:)

Back to the original question - I've had both older and newer pets, as well as the BFR, and I've always tried to find the pets with the original bridge PU. To me it has much more character and dark, classy growl, than the rather aggressive and tight D-Sonic. I also prefer the clean mid-position tone with the modified Steve's special - sounds sweeter and more three-dimensional, although, again, the D-Sonic-Coil cuts through a bit better.

Try them D-Activator-X pups from DiMarzio. I tried them in a Xiphos... They are fantastic...

On a side note, if you're not keeping that stock bridge pup, let me know. I'm looking for one for my JP6. If you want I can swap my D Sonic with you.;)

I'm very impressed by the DX set. It's far more power than a usual pup, and yes, in some areas it does sound like an active. BUT I must say, they are far more organic sounding than any active pup I've tried. They work with high gain very well, but have a certain "PAF"-ish character to them. The dynamics are just fantastic... Between EMGs whatever set and these, I'll go for these.

DW - hope you don't mind me going slightly "off - topic" here.

Having just re-furbed a Pet I had to remove a lot of cardboard packing that the previous owner had used to raise the bridge pickup. I have removed the cardboard and the pickup up is now flush to the body.

A pickup building buddy of mine has given me some self adhesive foam that he uses to raise pickup height in some guitars that he works on. Infact it is "Draught proofing material from a horse box" !!

Will you keep the pickup flush - what do other JP owners think about this?

I like it flush/stock with the original pickup. It is louder than my other guitars that way, I don't think it needs to be closer to the string. And flush it allows for the "direct mount" theory of better wood transfer to the pickup than with a dampening foam in between,

Trust me on this: Raise the Neck pup a bit more closer to the strings... HEAR how much the tone opens up further...;)
