The easiest solution is to turn the switch a little, so the way it moves is parallel to strings. This way it wont't change the position if you hit it accidentally from top.

This issue is one that I've seen many people discuss over the years. I think it's important to remember that the guitar was tailor made for Petrucci and his playing style. Interestingly enough, the control layout works incredibly well for me and my technique - which is the reason why I've paid some variation of his guitars (a SBMM JP50, SBMM JP157 and an Artisan Majesty).

With that all said, the only time the switch could ever possibly get in the way of my playing is when I'm doing full out strummed chords (funk style chords or using the Piezo on my Majesty and doing being old"e" acoustic guitar style strumming). However, to deal with this issue, I strum over the fretboard (around the 19th-24th frets). Not only do I miss the pickup selector switch, but it also darkens the sound up a bit (which I like), so to me this solution is a win-win!

You get used to it, they get in the way not only on the JPX but on the models with the toggle switch as well, but the JPX is really a bad design when in the neck position specially because the switch is also longer than usual. I believe John Petrucci himself never used the JPX live at least there is no record of that, not even in that video producing the JPX he only holds the guitar.

In the documentary of DT auditioning drummers, there are shots of JP using the JPX. But that guitar was released towards the end of a DT world tour in 2010. And their schedule got thrown off by Portnoy leaving the band. By the time they recorded A Dramatic Turn of Events the JP11 had been released so I'm sure he used that guitar for the recording, and definitely used it on the tours until the JP12 came out. I think it was more-so of timing than anything else. But one big thing to take away from it is that he went back to the 3 way switch again. I also believe that the BFRs didn't always have the push/pull for the coil split (I might be wrong), but that was added after the JPX which was probably the first time JP used the two pickups together without a split. So the influence of the JPX could be felt there as before JP always had the middle position as a split position on his guitars. However, I don't know if I'm right about that.
