JP16: DiMarzio Sonic Ecstasy pickups?

Let me be the first to ask. I see you're putting them in a SBMM. Does the regular JP6's have more room?

I took out the calipers and the EBMM JP6 has essentially the same dimensions, so it will depend on how the corners of the route are cut, and how the the pickup is made. If the corners are cut more towards square than a soft curve, then I believe they would fit easier.

Pete, did your pickup swap involve the same type of PCB baseplates and solderless connectors found on the EBMM Majesty? Or are the Sterling Majesty models soldered in the traditional way? How about the Sonic Ecstasies?

When I ordered these they were only available with the covers.

The SBMM are soldered in the traditional way, and the Sonic Ecstasy pickups are like a normal 4-conductor pickup w/chrome cover.

Comparing the tonality of the SBMM pickups to the DiMarzio Sonic Ecstasy pickups almost reads as if off the DiMarzio website


Overall the Sonic Ecstasy pickups have a bit more output & are not quite as compressed as the SBMM pickups, which have a fairly even frequency response on top of a fat low end. The SBMM pickups are great for a thick "hot-rodded" classic set-neck sound while the DiMarzio Sonic Ecstasy give a more articulate response with a bit of extra juice.

----------------SBMM ------------------ Sonic Ecstasy
Low end---- big, open, warm------------ not as big, tight and articulate
Midrange -- even/slight upper scoop --- had more pronounced upper mids w/harmonics 
Highs ----- fairly similar------------- a bit more clarity/definition.

are the cover removable?

The covers are first soldered on and then they are wax pottted. You could remove the solder joint to get the cover off but it would be a block of wax under there and not look very good. I bought a set, thought about removing the covers, but ended up returning them. I'm holding out for the non cover version.
