I've been using 10's on my JP since I bought it. It came with 10's so I've stuck with them, but there are times that i wish I had 9's, for ease of bending. I am afraid if i switch to 9's, the tone will sound too thin or shimmery. And with my new JP I ordered having a d-sonic in it, I am even more afraid of the tone thinning out too much if i put 9's on it...

I know JP himself uses 9's these days, but what do you guys recommend?

I switched

Hello,

I switched to 9s and am happy with the tone.

If you make the switch, you'll need to re-setup the bridge and adjust the intonation a little.

Have fun.

In past experience, with other guitars, 10's have had a meatier, more metallic sound.

I guess I will just have to try it out and see if it gets rid of the "stiffness" i sometimes feel out of the 10's on my JP...

Mr. Radd:
JP has a considerably larger rig setup than I do, so i am sure he make his 9's sound like 11's if he wants to!! haha!

thanks for the thread links kneeoh. I may try leaving the 10's and taking a spring out. I have 3 installed right now. Might be all i need! Of course i'll have to adjust the claw afterwards to compensate for the reduced tension...

Im on 10's on my 7 string, but Im thinking in switching to 11s.. might kill my fingers but time will tell.

10's are fine actually I can shred really comfortable but I want more power for my low strings :p Im still thinking about it

Best of both worlds: Hybrid.

I used 10's at the begining for the same reason you do. I allways played 9's and when my JP came with 10's, i liked the sound so much i feared that if i'll put 9's on it'll lose that meaty sound.

well, since i use hybrids, the lows are intact, and the highs, for my suprise, sounds the same, only a lot more slinky, which is exactly what i wanted. the guitar didn't lose any of it's meat.

Try the Hybrid's. They're awesome.

I'm thinking of switching to Hybrids, because I'm tired of having the low E and A strings bouncing around when I play Afterlife and other riffin' songs down there. I just have to use up the last 6 packs of RPS 9s first...:D

I switched from 10's to 9's on my JP6. Just had to re-level the bridge by adjusting the trem claw tension a bit. I'm happy with it! The 10s did have a little more sustain or something.. but they were a little difficult to bend after decades of Super Slinky usage!

That's pretty funny. I played with 9's for MANY years then decided one day to go to 10s (before I got my JPMM6) and I have never wnated to go back. I love the feeling of some meat under your fingers when bending. It al comes down to waht we get used to and our personal preferences.
