im looking to get a jp6 mystic dream, matching headstock, jp inlays. which the uk distributor has in stock. im very very tempted and plan on ordering it monday and it should arrive early next week. the thing is its a 2007 model .its brand new in its case untouched but they've had it in stock for a while.

my question is what differences have there been in the last 2 years in regards to the jp6 . i know the pickups have been changed . but im wondering what else. ?

and also whats your thoughts. the distributor guys here have been really great. and with the help of the lads at the local guitar shop ive gettin a decent deal on it i think . but am i better getting a newy or an oldy. ??

cheers.

I haven't been around for a while so I cannot comment on any new electronics. Your 2007 model I am pretty sure with have the DiMarzio D-sonic in the bridge which is pretty heavy in the upper midrange department. I don't believe the neck pickup was different than the older models so basically a modified Air Norton (which sounds super sweet).

You'll still have the center split which takes some getting used to but can become indispensible. In my case, I have to make my guitar sound like a banjo because I play a lot of musicals and the twang mixed with the piezo is pretty close. It also sounds incredibly cool through a high gain amp when you want to make your guitar sound like a tree shredder for palm mutes and power chord type playing.

Sounds like a great guitar. Yeah, really just the p'ups have changed.

I'd say if you're getting a good deal then get it! You'll have a warranty, it is a new guitar. You can always swap the p'ups down the line if you decide you don't bond with the stock ones.

One thing that might be different are the string gauges. IIRC, the original string gauge that came with the JP6 were 0.010". Then, for a while, they came with 0.009". Then, I think they went back to 0.010". I can't remember when those changes were made.

Otherwise, the only other changes were the pickups and, like other EBMMs, changes to the colors available.

Yes. Case is still SKB-made, but it is a few inches longer and the interior shape is made to fit the JP only. Case also has a little placard above the handle on the outside that says MUSICMAN and then JP's signature designating the model of guitar.

But overall it is basically the same case as before. BFR guitars get much nicer G&G cases.

To be honest i dont really like original ones the guitar is perfect for playing it without the amp but as long as I'm pluggin it into the amp it just sound crap dont like Steve's Special at all cause for me it just sound weak/it actually sounds like there is something wrong with the guitar.

I recently spoke to Bulb from Periphery and after that I thought to swap over the pup's to Bare Knuckle pickups or leave Air Norton and get the D-Sonic or new version of Petrucci's Liquid Fire.

Any Ideas ?

Other thing is that: can you see wood through the lacker i mean the structure not wood itself?

In case you wanted to make it like the new JP's

Liquifire

Dimarzio DP227 DP 227 John Petrucci Liquifire pickup - eBay (item 400079322075 end time Nov-14-09 12:06:42 PST)

I didn't see a The Crunch pickup on there but I'm sure one will pop up

I must get into it and hope that shipping wont be a killer.

Cheers

yeah i checked it out myself it will cost me about £130 to get the liqufire and the crunch lab pickups for it. but to be honest im not particularly intrested myself in changing pickups in a guitar because jp used them on the new dream theatre album. im not that much of a follower. :) i bought the guitar because from what ive read heard and seen its a pretty versatile instrument. and looks the dogs bollox to boot also. ;)

IMHO, I wouldn't bother updating the pickup set in the JP. I now own the Crunch Lab/LiquiFire set in my new JP6 and although they are awesome the D-Sonic/custom set is great too. If fact, a BFR JP6 with the D-Sonic/custom set sounds better to my ears than a JP6 with either pickups. Remember that when John switched over to the D-Sonic he was still playing the original JP guitar. Who knows (other than a few) how much consideration was given during the R&D phase of the Crunch Lab/LiquiFire towards the original guitar (woods/voicing) since we primarily see John perform with the BFR version of the instrument. Either way, it's an amazing sounding guitar. Enjoy!

Adam keeping up with petrucci is a suicide this guy changes gear too often and therefore i'd rather go my own way.I like the sound of old DT albums but i cant hear it while im using those pickups.
Like i've mentioned earlier i like air norton but SS is so so... I've noticed that there is a drop of volume in between so i would probably have to program the middle setting a bit louder using my looper and boost so I decided that I need look for :cool:something stronger like D-sonic or bare knuckle... hence my decision.

You will be very happy with it as it is.. it's an awesome guitar, more versatile than a lot of people realise too especially with the piezo
