Hey - folks - back again still pining for a JP6 - and very very close to pulling the trigger. I know it comes standard with 10's....just wondering if anyone had put 9s on...and if anyone recommended against it. I'm thinking of having the shop I'm buying it from (online) put 9s on and set it up...level tremelo...etc....before shipping it to me.

Thanks

Dude, I put 9's on mine. As with everything it all comes down to personal preference.

I put 9's on mine. Took about 15 minutes total to get the strings changed and trem re-levelled. The intonation remained intact, and I didn't feel a need to tweak the truss rod, either.

I put 9's on mine, too. I was able to set it up for ultra-low action (1mm high E at 12th fret, 1.5 mm low E at 12th fret) and there is next to zero buzz, and certainly nothing you'd ever hear throught the amp. It took a tad bit of tinkering over time, but I was able to do it.

9's work just fine. However, as soon as I play up all my new packs of 9's I plan to switch to hybrids. I got some Hybrid Slinkies the other day which are 9's on the trebles and 10s on the bass and put them on my JPM P1 and I love 'em!

It really makes a difference to have those heavier bass strings on there so you can really dig in on the rythmns and it makes fast alt. picking (i.e. the Metallica "gallop") a lot easier to do with a stiffer string. But, of course, you still get the ease of bending on the G, B & high E strings. I plan to "convert" all my guitars to these as soon as I use up my 25 packs of 9's. :D

Actually...this might be a good idea - I keep forgetting about these hybrid sets...I used to use slinkys but found that I like D'Addarios better...I wonder if they make any hybrid sets...or if I have to build them myself.

Thanks for the inputs

Yes they do, my friend! They might be harder to find than the Ernie's (at least locally for me they are), but you can get them from Musicians Friend for sure.

D'Addario EXL125 Super Top/Regular Bottom Strings

MF Link

I use both EB's and D'Addarios, almost interchangeably. They are so close in specs I almost can't tell the difference.

I think you're going to like the hybrid sets a lot. ;)

I'm pleased to announce that I ordered my JP6 Mystic Dream fully loaded today!!! I had them leave the .10s on...and I'll see how that feels before I change them to .9s. Now...how to explain it to my wife....
