jp6 versatility

i was just trying to make my jp6 (w/dsonic) a little more versatile. i was thinking of getting a push/pull tone pot but i was just wondering how you guys would configure the new positions and why.

and another thing. the standard jp6 seems to lack alot of the depth that ive found in other guitars. im thinking its either the basswood or maybe the pickups. the guitar fairs great when im playing with another guitarsist but when i am the only one or i play at home its a little plain. do you guys have any recommendations for me to liven up my tone? i may just have to get a bfr and hope that the alder/mahogany/maple does the trick but thats about 1k out of my price range at the moment.

but in reply to your first question, i don't think adding a pot will take care of any blandness you're experiencing. also, when you play with 2 guitarists, sound is done differently right? making sure no one is going over the top, but when going solo, that concern is gone. maybe you need something which allows you to change EQ settings in the middle of a song? maybe an FX unit?

of course, buying an extra ball is always a good idea. but the guitar is not always at fault.

it just seems like no matter what i do i cant add whats missing. ive got an axe fx ultra so if there is a way to do that im positive its inside that box. and i was just wondering about the splitting of pups to get a nice dirty blues tone. the jp is perfect for fast lead type stuff and great for that blank slate studio type clean but it doesnt seem like it accels at that in between stuff. its just scary that this guitars tone might not be fore me and it has spoiled me to the point where everything else feels like a toy

problem is his pickups are voiced for high gain with some cleans in between and not cleans with some leads in between...

short of changing pickups, i don't think there's alot you can do. i agree the clean is a bit shallow but that has to do with the action we use on JPs (low). i say take a shot at making new presets, otherwise it's pickups.

I never had a tonal issue with a JP. But, that is me. Maybe you need to look at the Axe Fx as the culprit. It is a GREAT piece of gear, but, has so many different settings it literally can change your tone drastically.

Have you played it through a regular amp on the clean channel just to see?

Dante has also made some good suggestions. Tone is a tough call. What works for one may not work for others.

As an Ultra user myself, there are times when just going to a base amp and cab block or plugging into a real amp is a good idea to know where your basis of tone is. The Axe-FX is great, but it can change your tone drastically with each tweak. I can get my Axis' sound like crap and some of the stock patches do it too, but taking a good base tone and only minor effects and amp tweaks is all I need to make it sing in just about any genre.

but I would love to have a fender like tone from it if possible and I thought of push pull pot...soon I hope I will have this...
I have a wiring diagram from a forum member here , I will search for it home (I am at the office now) it and send it to you if you want

hmm, considering the scale of the demand posed, might i suggest a variax?

I've tried jp's and I know already if I got one it would get lower output pickups probably dimarzio paf pros and a push pull to get both full pickups on. My favorite setting on my ASS and any hh guitar.

My first thought when reading it was using some sort of EQ to help modify the tone - whether through your AxeFX or through something as simple as the Boss stompbox version. Lots of tone shaping available that way.

Sometimes it's also related to the speakers (or speaker sims) that you're using... so there's another possibility.

What about also taking the guitar with you to a music shop, and demoing different amp/cab setups to see if something there strikes your fancy... then trying to reconstruct that setup in your AxeFX?

thanks for the input guys. i don think its the axe fx. ive had this issue with my mark iv and with my old rack setup. using the axe fx the jp is the only guitar i have this issue with. i loved the tones out of my axis that i had to get rid of and i love the sound from my old prs ce24 (too bad it doesnt feel anywhere near as good as the jp6) any pickup recommendations to get me closer to an axis? im hoping its a matter of pickups and not tone woods

im not sure id get along with with the v carve neck. i am however gassing for a y2d. i think that it will fix the top end issues but i am curious as to if it will give me a big tight bottom end that ive found with my other guitars.

Doesn't the Luke have EMGs in it?? I've never known a guitar with EMGs to be versatile.

Yes,EMGs,but they are not just "for metal" pickups.Luke has really nice cleans IMHO.

Have you played the Luke? I thought similarly for many years until I actually played a Luke ... kicked myself for not trying one sooner. The pickups in the Luke are fantastic and cover a surprising amount of ground very well.

fatoni, I have the push/pull tone pot installed in my JP6 and love it. It's all single coil tones when pulled and all humbucking tones when pushed. I get some great tones out of it. i have a CE24 and find the tone better when using it but it is mostly the pickups I think. I can hear the bottom end is a little more pronounced with the CE, but it is also just slightly muddy (mahogany does that). I'd try different pickups and install the push/pull pot while you are at it. you'll be glad you kept it if you can find the tone you are looking for!

FYI - I'm rockin' the new LiquiFire/CrunchLab pups and highly recommend them. The neck pickup sounds so much better than the AN and the bridge is definitely crunchy but still good for cleans.
