I'm planning for a JP7 as soon as I can get my hands on one. Probably would be Mystic Dream, matching headstock, fully loaded. I'd like to know a few things:

1. Is the neck thickness the same as the JP6?
2. What string guage is the nut slotted for?
3. Anyone turn the blade on the bridge towards the neck like the JP6? How does it sound?
4. Last but not least, anyone got pics?:D

1. Is the neck thickness the same as the JP6?

Not sure if they are exactly the same thickness but I've played a JP6 and they feel very similar. The JP7 is definitely wider but it still feels awesome and is really easy to play.

2. What string guage is the nut slotted for?

On would think that it would be filed for whatever gauge John Petrucci is currently using when the guitar was built but I recently moved up from 9's to 10's and the nut slots were fine and do not bind up whatsoever.

I think the guys at Muisc Man did their homework when flipping the pickup around on the 7 string. Here's a quote from Dimarzio's website concerning the D-Sonic:

dimarzio.com said:
With the solid bar toward the bridge, the sound is a little brighter and better-defined, and this is the direction we recommend for heavy strings and low tunings. With the adjustable polepieces toward the bridge, the sound is warmer and a touch louder, and we think this works best for standard tuning and more solo-oriented playing. Each coil has a unique tonal character, so the two split sounds are different, and parallel humbucking produces a third clean and bright sound.

4. Last but not least, anyone got pics?:D

I still haven't had a chance to take any good oness but there a ton of pics in this thread:

Hopefully Fogman will chime in and hook you up with a few thousand pics. ;)

Actually, yes you can. I don't exactly have large hands... and many would say I have stubby fingers, but I have no problem wrapping my thumb around the neck for bass notes.

I had the same question before I got my JP7. I had only a played a JP6 before it, and the neck profile is identical, only a tad wider to fit the extra string. It's fantastic.

And you can wrap your thumb around to get the 6th string! Just thakes a bit of practice to keep the 7th string silent.

1. Seems real close if not the same.
2. 10 to to 46 (I think they all are?)
3. I ditched the Dimarzios'
4. I don't have a MD but I have seen some good pics on the forum from time to time.

Yeah, the natty headstock rocks! It's got beautiful birds-eye too, it would have been a shame to cover that up.

Lionel, when I had my Ibanez 7, I had a D-Sonic 7 in the bridge and an Air Norton 7 in the neck. I had the blade of the D-Sonic towards the neck and I found that the Low B was not as defined. Also, there was a tad less treble from the other stings. Short after that I put it with the blade towards the bridge and the Low B was chunky, well defined, as were the other strings. Hope that helps ya.
