I am not sure if this is a good place to ask but I would like to learn the ins and outs of guitar set up rather then paying someone to do it for me.

I have a 6 string JPMM and had it set up at EB before it was sent to me. That was about a year ago. It is now starting to have serious tuning stability problems even after fully stretching my strings out.

Now, the bridge height hasn't moved and I have reset the trem angle so I am guessing the other other thing to adjust would be the truss. I also just got a strobe tuner to make sure to set my intonation as well. I just can't seem to get this thing to stay stable and play right....any suggestions where I could go for some accurate good reading for setups? Thank you all.

I am a little confused with the answer there since it says to adjust guitar action with the truss rod. Ive alway been told this is a NO NO.

Truss rod adjustment is easy to do but can lead to problems if ur not careful. As long as you take it slow with small adjustments at a time youll be fine. If in doubt there is actually an article on truss rod adjustment in this months guitarist. I had a small niggle with my JP6 which i rang Customer service about. They were so helpful and friendly and told me what i needed to do with the truss rod. It sorted the problemout and my JP6 plays just fine now :)

IVsakeN,

If you hang around here for any length of time, you will learn that the truss rod is your FRIEND! That's why MusicMan has made it so simple to adjust, you don't even have to take your strings off, or remove a single screw.

Maybe it's a gamble to turn the truss rod on another manufacturer's guitar, but you've got a teflon-coated truss rod with an easy-to-turn wheel on the end.

Think about it, if you change string gauges the neck will bow differently than it did with the previous gauge you used. If your unfinished neck has experienced humidity changes, the wood will react.

What are the chances your trem moved or your saddles? Less than the chance that your neck has adjusted to its surroundings. Get to know the truss rod, read the great setup FAQs on the main Ernie Ball site, and you'll be glad you did!

There are lots of great folks here who are willing to lend an ear, too.
