That's the first good pic I've seen of that guitar, thanks! That is sick. I can't tell, does it have any ebony or rosewood fretboard?

Maybe he has a different international touring rig? Not sure.

But for all his G3 affairs he toured solely with the Road King series II and an extra for backup, plus his usual rack mounts.

Not sure, could be different.

Changes up his rig with every tour. The main effects stay pretty much the same, but he's switched from Mark IVs to Road Kings and back a couple times.

The G3 tour that was JP, JS, and Vai, he used the Road King. They were series I. After that G3 tour, when he played with JS, and Paul Gilbert, his rig consisted of his Mark IV's and some rack effects and whatnot.

can't tell about the fretboard, but it definitely has pickup rings on it. Interesting to know what that is. Maybe it was a exclusive BFR for Japan?

I'm not seeing the pickup rings you're talking about. I see the normal route for a BFR.

here, I blew up the pic a bit, maybe you are right. Maybe it's the lighting, or the small pic, but it looked like the rings to me.

I believe he said he thought he got better tone with the pickup directly mounted into the body as opposed to being suspended by pickup rings. Doesn't the prototype he plays on the Score DVD have pickup rings? It's this one right?

That would make sense. You get better tonal transferrance from the wood of the guitar with a direct mount.

yes, plus he likes to tuck his pinky finger in the bridge routing a little for wrist support.

BUT he did have a prototype BFR on the Score DVD that had the rings.
