Hello fellow MM'ers because I have just recently received a used but in brand new condition MM JPX from my younger brother. It is said in MusicMan's website that the frets are made out of Stainless Steel. But visually it looks like Nickel? Due to the colour of the frets which are like golden brown?

Are there any way for me to tell if these are indeed stainless steel frets?

It might be one of the older models: http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-guitars/53779-jpx-had-ss-frets-start.html

You can always go to the sticky and post your SN and they'll tell you exactly when your guitar was born :)

Either way, as good as SS frets are, EBMM's nickel frets are nothing to shake a stick at. I thought my AL HH had SS frets because they were so shiny and smooth. Turns out I was wrong - that shows you how well they do it.

Well yes, I know how well they made this guitars and it's not so much about the workmanship that I am concerned about but more of the longevity of the frets as my playing style requires me to bend a lot on the strings.

It's not necessarily string bending that wears frets. For most players, the worst and most obvious fret wear tends to be on the plain strings near the nut in the open chord positions and is very localised to a narrow 'line' under the strings. Fret wear higher up the neck where we tend to do most bending looks very different (broader, shallow across the frets) and is therefore usually less severe.

Post your guitar's serial number in the serial number thread and ask what frets you have. That's the only way to know for sure.

And FWIW, it took me 7 years of three gigs per week, plus rehearsal and practice, to seriously wear the frets out on my old strat. It's not such a critical issue. Besides, EBMM will do a factory re-fret (to original spec) at very competitive prices. :)

Initially, the JPX did not have SS frets. Mine did not (2010 build). The cutover was later. I forget when. Best bet is as suggested. Contact CS and get you build date

I think you can tell if it is the newer version with SS frets by where the trem post sits. Or does that trick only work on the regular petrucci models?

you can ask in the guitar birthday thread what frets your particular guitar has.

2012 is when the SS frets started.
