I have a JPX Turquoise Pearl roasted neck Guitar Center limited run.
Long story short im having isuues with the jumbo frets I guess. This came from the store with 9's on it. I had a luthier set it up and put 10's on it. Thinking this would be amazing after all that.
My fingers get stuck when doing slides and feels like speed bumps.I had to have the neck adjusted a bit to prevent high E rolloff also.(not noob player been playing 20 years)
Does anyone else have these issues with the jumbo frets? There cant be that much difference in the med jumbo frets the other BFR's have.Seriously this is a problem trying to do runs especially Petrucci runs
I talked to my luthier/setup guy about the fret issues.he basically said we dont dress or redo frets on a new guitar we get rid of the guitar and find something that works for you.

Is this maybe not set to specs or is the JPX just like that? Id hate to sell this beautiful machine.
Any help welcome thanks!

Jumbo frets are just that. Jumbo. Some people like them some don't. Kinda like a scallop neck without the scallop. I am not a fan of jumbo frets myself. Yes, there is a difference between medium and jumbo. I notice them instantly.

Did you play the guitar first? Ever play with jumbo frets? Might be you are fretting too hard. Almost have to lighten up the touch. Best way for me to describe it.

If you think that is bad, play an ESP with the extra jumbo frets. Jumbos are a different animal because you really can't feel much wood under your fingers. However, they require a lot lighter touch which leads to less fatigue if you are playing for 2 or 3 hours. I wouldn't give up on it yet. See if you can adapt.

I believe with a little time you will get used to it. When I haven't played mine for a while, then play it, they feel large, but after a short adjustment period, I don't notice....

I love jumbo frets myself! :D Just play it and get used to it and then you wont notice it! Perhaps if you switch to a guitar which doesn't have that, you might even miss it!

Thanks yah I've had some Ibanez and Ive had Jackson's.I tried this one out first but not
Enough to get a good feel I guess.
I don't recall them being like this.sometimes my fingers get stuckon
a slide.I just conditioned the fretboard and lubed up the strings.now
If I can just keep it like that...think Ill experiment with the setup a bit
.Not gonna give up yet!
Anybody play a JP BFR (technically the JPX is BFR too)and have a
Fret comparison? Worst comes to worst ill try to find a koa or something.

I think you should switch to a regular JP6. What do you know I have one right here I can trade you for that JPX ;)

But seriously some just don't like jumbo frets. I love huge frets, although it makes very little difference to me going from my JPX to my other JP's.

i cant really decide whether i like jumbo frets over medium. my main guitar is a jp6, but i also play a us strat and a ibanez pgm301. sometimes i'll go from playing the jp6 to and pgm and think "man these jumbo frets are really awesome". then i'll go to the jp6 and i'll be loving the frets on that. i suppose i might be a little biased towards the jp6 though because when i go back to that, it feels like "home", if you know what i mean.

you would get along with the jp6 or a jp6 bfr more as it stands now, but if you gave those frets a chance you might well warm to them. orrr you could even try a jpxi or jp12 as the frets on them are in between the jp6 bfr and the jpx :)

Give it a chance and if you dont mesh with the jumbos get a model that you are used to and is more to your liking. With jumbos you really do not make contact with the fretboard and have to play with a very light touch. That is probably the reason you are having trouble sliding up and down to notes as you are using heavy pressure that you would normally use on smaller frets and have to go over a lot of wire to reach the note you are aiming for which is hanging you up. I do not care for them myself, just like a lot of guys cant stand vintage frets.

I have a JPX and JP12 - going to the JP12 was refreshing, going back to the JPX was a bit weird. I have just become accustomed to transitioning between the two and getting comfortable with both. Yes, the difference is noticeable but just ease up your touch a little on the JPX.

Thanks for all the input.I did have my jpx setup again a little different.
I spent lots of time playing different fretted electrics to compare.
I find the smaller(shorter?) Frets faster and i think I like the feel of the wood under my fingers actually.
Ill be working on my jumbo fret chops! Still would like to personally compare
The other JPs.I had played the jp6 briefely when i played my jpx before I bought it.
The overall quality just felt way better (on jpx)it had the piezos, felt larger, and I'm a sucker for ebony
so I didn't pay much attention at the time.
My Bongo has a painted neck and i find it fast and smooth so would like to try out
The other BFR petruccis.

Well I must say I just had my jpx setup from a different person explained the issues had the neck straightened into the pocket
And no more fretboard blues(except the good ones!)something was terribly wrong.its playing like a dream now.
I thought my Jackson with jumbos was never like that.well back to being a happy JP owner.will still have to try out the other JP models sometime.
