JPX vs. JP12

I'm thinking of getting another JP, but I want it to have a slightly different tonal characteristic from my JP7 (basswood body, maple neck, rosewood board).

I want a 6-string JP to go with my 7-string. I'm looking at either the JPX or JP12. The JPX has an chambered alder body, maple top, mahogany neck and ebony board. The JP12 has a basswood body, mahogany tone block, maple top, mahogany neck and ebony board.

Which do you think would sound the most "different" from a standard JP7? Right now I'm leaning toward the JPX for two reasons: the chambered body for extra resonance and the slightly fatter neck (15" radius vs. 20"). My one and only complaint about the JPs is their skinny necks. I like a fat neck (like a 7.5" Strat) for the feel and because I think it adds to the overall tone.

If a skinny neck is not your thing, I would stay far away from the JP12

The jpx has the closest neck profile to the JP6 while it has vastly different woods. That coupled with the body chambers would make it sound very different. I love my JPX, fantastic guitar and a very good alternative to the JP6. Keep in mind, it does have a 5 way switch, which seems to put people off.

The 20" radius of the XII is super thin and flat. The JPX is going to have approximately the same neck shape as your JP6 (they're hand finished so they're all a tad different). And the JPX is going to probably yield you the greatest contrast to your JP6, in my opinion, and I've owned all three.

How's the sustain with the JPX? Are you able to compare it with other non-chambered models? I have owned a chambered Gibson Les Paul and a Brian May replica, both chambered, and both very much benefited from the chambering (more resonance and sustain).

Sustain is fine on all the JP models I've owned, there's always been less sustain on guitars with floating trems. I get that back by blocking them with wood both ways so the sustain block is in contact with the body allowing it to resonate more. The JPX is the most versatile of the JP's in my opinion, all the BFRs will sound different from your JP7.

The JP12 is great, I've had 2 one in a 6 and the other in a 7, but I've kept the JPX7 the longest.
