Hello friends,

I have just sold my old JP6 guitar and now I'm considering to buy an BFR JP guitar. Unfortunately in the Serbia where I'm from, there is only one dealer of Music Man guitars and he has only one of JPX6 guitar beside others regular JP's on the stock.
I will go for sure to try it out, but at this moment I would like to hear impressions from the guys who have JPX guitar for some time. What are the strong points as well as the weak points of JPX6 and what I can expect from this guitar, from your point of view?
Second question is in connection with the fact that this guitar is on the market quite a while but I can not find one single video where John Petrucci is playing JPX actually, just two videos where he just holds this guitar while he was saying how it is awesome.

I would higly appreciate your help, thanks!
Cheers

I have yet to find any "weak points" whatsoever. It is a very graceful guitar, the ebony fingerboard feels like a million dollars and I love the finish. Mine sounds rich and refined....

I guess if I had to identify a weak point - it would be that it doesn't photograph well, LOL....pictures don't do the finish any justice at all !!!!

Give it a try

Only weak point for me is the 5-way. It can get in the way if you are strumming hard but other than that no issues for me

Well, what made me sell my JPs is the fact that I'm not in love with the tremolo. I need to have a guitar that's easy to detune to e.g. dropped D or dadgad in a couple of seconds when I'm on stage. And the "floating" trem just messes things up. I really wish I could get a hardtail JP one day. I've owned a JP6 mystic dream, JP7 stealth and a JPXI. They were all great guitars. If I had to choose one of them I would choose the JP6. I like that body shape best out of those three.

I have no issues with the JPX, its one badass guitar; period. The color is pure evil and if you are a pansie and look into it, you turn to stone.

I love my JPX. As others have said the 5 way can be an issue when in the neck position depending on how you pick but it's not a problem for me. Also, the neck is painted. Some people don't like this as much the unfinished neck on the standard but it's a personal thing.

I love mine. I too would prefer a 3 way toggle, but it's no real issue. It's a fantastic guitar. I do prefer my JPXI just a tad, but thats due to the SS frets and flatter radius.

Here's a strong point: Sustain or days!

The chambering really makes the notes "sing", if you will. I actually don't mind the 5-way blade at all. I think there's been a total of three times I've accidentally switch from the neck pickup. Thats really not that problematic if you ask me. The color is by far my favorite out of the "X" models. The only other finish I've ever seen on ANY other guitar that I've actually preferred is the Mystic Dream finish.

Also, the first fret inlay is just plain badass. That is all.

I never loved JP guitar till they have released the BFR models for one reason! That cut on the where the right had is suppose to be. Some people like this, I really don't. I keep the guitar low on the strap so it kinda slips from time to time. So from that moment on, I think that a JPX would be a better replacement, because that guitar has no weak spot, other than that, IMO.

P.S. Gledaj, ako ti vec to pravi problem, kupi "Tremol-no" sistem i resices svoje probleme. U kom bendu sviras?

cheers :)

I think you should ask yourself: Why did you sell your JP6. Because it's basically the same guitar. I've owned several and they really don't feel and sound THAT different.

Thank you all! JPX looks just awesome.
Still there's left for me to experience it and to see if I feel like home when I'm playing this guitar :)

Hi Malmucci,

well, I don't have such a good reason to sell it. At the time I bought it, this guitar was single one second hand JP guitar available and still you can't find these here on this market, so I had no option to choose that much.
Mentioned JP6 plays and sounds just great. Reasons for selling it might be, rosewood fretboard (I really don't like it's brown color), Body color is carbon blue which also is not my favorite one and last reason is that I have four more guitars and no room where to keep these. That's why I'm selling JP6 and one more Ibanez RG750 and instead of two very good guitars I would like to have one top class guitars. Therefore my choice would be MM JPX or JPXI, but here for the price I got there is no JPXI available so my choice dropped on JPX.
I tried to be short, but... :)

Ćao Dreadge,

Jesam li te dobro razumeo i ti imaš JPX?
Nisam potpuno razumeo ovo oko Tremol-No :)

I got no band, I'm just in love with guitars and music, can't live without it :)

Agreed. Great playing!

Thanks Ben, although that was not my point in this thread :)
I saw you have an JPXI, can you tell me some of yours impressions about it, can you compare it with JPX? Is it sounding a lot different than JPX, and if does which one left better impression on you and why?
I do appreciate if you share some of your experience with JPXI and eventually JPX.

Best regards

Man just use a wood shim with a dab of elmers glue and block the trem, VERY easy to do, then you can drop to D with no worries and be still be in tune. Break a string and youre still in tune as well

You can buy those trem stoppers or a tremol-no but for a quick fix a wood shim is all you need

Edit: I just realized that you already sold the guitar :(

I've played a JPX with a roasted neck in a guitar center a few times and didn't like the placement of the 5 way pickup selector. That was the primary reason I bought the JPXII and now JPXI. The five way only provides one more pickup position than the standard three way fair when used in conjunction with the push/pull tone knob. That one other position is another split-single coil tone and I didn't see myself needing that in a JP. My other impressions of the JPX was the neck shape. It seemed to be a little fatter toward the bass side sort of similar to an Axis but much thinner. I didn't mind the shape at all but do prefer the symmetrical feel of the JPXII/JPXi for the type of music that I find myself playing on it which is more of the technical variety. Lastly, I didn't want to have to bother finding a newly manufactured JPX that had the stainless steel frets. Who knows? That could have been quite easy but in the end I just went with the simplicity of ordering the JPXI. Upon weighing the pros and cons of the JPXII/JPXI vs. JPX the only advantage I found was the color of the JPX and possibly the unique character of the chambered body. Every other pro went to the JPXII and JPXI. Three way, neck shape, stainless steel frets, updated tremolo plate, and ease of attainment. I'm very happy with the JPXI and haven't even for a moment wished that I'd ordered the JPX. The Onyx color looks pretty underwhelming in photos and videos online but in person is very attractive and has a slight bluish character to it.
All that being said I still wouldn't mind finding myself in ownership of a Barolo JPX someday. Ha.
