Greetings to All,

In a couple days I will be a lucky owner of a new JPXI-6 guitar. I see this model comes with gauge 9 strings
but I would prefer to put 10's on it as 9's are a bit light for me.

While reading the FAQ section, it says that you have to file the nut out to put heavier strings on. Would I have to do this to the nut to put 10's on, or are they talking for 11's and 12's?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but just I don't want to mess up the guitar any.

Thanks to anyone who responds.

In my experience - just changed from 009s to 010s on my new JP13 2 days ago - no problems (010 - 046 EB cobalts).

In the past, I've tried to go with a heavier bottom on a JP and have had issues with strings too wide for the slots.

I just got a new 2013 jp6 Stealth and the strings really feel like .010s. Is that possible that it shipped with .010s?

I have noticed on my last three new EBMM guitars that the nut has been incredibly tight for the .09's that were on it. I had to file the nut slots for the lower strings just to accomodate the .09's (so I just filed it for .10's, instead). I would check it out by sliding the string back and forth gently to see if it's binding up in the slot before you restring it with .10's and find out the hard way!

Thanks Everyone, I appreciate the responses. The UPS page shows I will get it later today, so I will check it out and report back later.

If it's a 2013 it definitely shipped with 9-42.

Wow. My guitar's birthday was January 7th 2013 according to the serial number. I would swear those were .010's. I just put .009 super slinky's on last night and the feel lighter. Hmm. I wonder if different styles of strings feel differently as far as tension.

Well for anyone that saw my other post about opening the guitar too early (due to the cold), I didn't get to see it much, but from what I saw of the nut it appears that it is cut for the default string gauge as well.

When you did your filing, did you use an actual file or did you just take the existing string and slide it around until it ground a space out? And if you used a file, what thickness?

I used files for my JPXI. My dad has the Stew Mac nut file set so I used a slightly smaller file than the current string gauge for each slot. I just went one pass at a time and checked if the new string would bind up in the nut. I have used pieces of strings before with good results, but now that I have access to files, I just use those.

Cool, thanks!

Now that I have played it a bit, I actually kind of like the 9s. But I will keep all of this in mind if go with the 10s later.
