So I have a lot of things on my mind recently, and felt like I need to vent and share with you guys. Definitely related to EBMM and some of it a tiny bit OT. I'll start with the EBMM related stuff.

So I walked into my local GC yesterday, and wanted to try out the new TC Electronics Corona Chorus since I've seen the demo and promo videos...of course JP being one of them and Steve Morse also had used it briefly as I remember. I've been looking to get one for some time to slowly build my pedal board for my Blackstar HT20. Anyway, it is a fantastic chorus pedal. Very versatile and tones of usable organic tones on both clean and distortion. The chorus is one of my favourite effects to us on top of delay and reverb. The only thing right now that is holding me off from buyinh one, is that I hear Suhr is going to be coming out with a chorus possibly this year. I will return to this subject shortly.

Now that I played the heck out of that pedal, I of course decided to go to the EBMM pillar they have there. Now this GC is in NYC, so they made sure to stock a lot of EBMMs which is awesome for me. They have about 6 AL HH axes now plus two of the specials with MM90s...not sure how they are still there, but I saw a guy pull down the gold one and seemed to like it...but I think he was a lefty as he was holding it upside down hehe. Anyway, I walked around the pillar and saw a JPXI! First of all, I absolutely love the color! It is somewhere between Crystal Magic, Sapphire Black and Black Sparkle...but towards the black side of a shade. I decided to plug it in and see how the new radius and SS frets felt. Basically it is AWESOME!!! The stainless steel frets I absolutely love and whenever I need a refret at some point on my Y2D that is the direction I will go. The whole guitar just felt really tight and resonant, full and fat sounding with a lot of clarity and definition. Really really good for what it is meant for. I personally wish it had the 5 way though like the JPX. Now the radius was actually really nice. I was not sure what to expect, but it was really comfortable and really easy for legato runs and string skipping. Barr chords were a little tougher than on a 10 or 12 radius, but that's only because that is what I have been playing for years now. The neck profile actually felt very nice and really did not feel all that thin to me. So anyway, great guitar and I think I would like one somewhere down the line.

Now back to where I left off earlier with the potential Suhr chorus pedal. I just got my early B-day present on Tuesday which is the Suhr Riot distortion pedal. This is a really really good little box with a lot of thought put into it. Those guys really do some amazing work all the way around. It provides plenty of gain and does sound very natural on a clean channel and reacts like a tube amp distortion. I will go as far as to say that is actually sounds better than my lead channel coming from the Blackstar, which on its own is fantastic. But again, I got this so I can have variation. The 3 voicing switch is really cool, and all 3 positions have completely different tones to offer. Every move of the tone knob and gain and volume give you so many different options. Rolling off the volume on the Y2D cleaned up the tone nicely. It does not have that harshness as other pedals and sounds huge and fat. Now I really want the Shiba Drive and the koko boost as well for more versatility. I am a fan of Johns work and would love to get one of those amps down the line as well.

Now comes the confession part, which is also related to all of this. As some of you may know already, I sold off my Carbon Blue Silo Special to a fellow forumite Sal (Music Man :) ). This came as a surprise to me as well, but I wanted to come clean and hope that you guys wont hate me haha. I absolutely love Silo Specials, and have been praising them for a long time, but always struggled with something. I know its very vague, as I cant pin point it myself. I still love the guitar and really wish I could keep it, but unfortunately I cannot. I dont have the means to have more than 2 guitars. So basically I feel like a traitor, as I found what I am looking for in a Suhr Pro S3. Overall it fits ME better. I will not say that it is a better guitar than the Silo Special, because the quality and playability on both is absolutely top notch. I hope this is okay to mention another company...I know that BP has respect for John, as they are doing something right including CS and they have a huge passion for the instruments and the quality they put into them. I do have to suffer for my betrayal and wait about 7 months till I get the guitar haha.

So there you go! Wanted to get all that off my mind and share my experiences with a few different things I have been dealing with the past few days. Feel free to chime in on whatever topics above. I think I covered a good amount of stuff, and I apologize if this seems like a long rant.

And by the way, I LOVE my EBMM Y2D more and more! I was having such a blast with the Riot yesterday. The other cool thing is that it sort of matches the purple in the purple sunset  hehe.

Guys, can it with the stupid posts ... you have your own forum for inside jokes. Roubster- congrats on finding what you like to play. It's all about finding what works for you, and that's usually a mix of things.

Btw, the Riot is a neat pedal. I've got one, sounds great through a clean amp. Though I haven't really been able to use it with an amp that's already got some dirt dialed it, which I'd hoped to. Still a cool pedal.

no one ought to hate you for finding something that suits you better. the MM range spans pretty wide, but it doesn't cover everything. confession: i'm in the same boat :)
ill always be a musicman fan though, as an overall company they're still my number one

For simple setups I have really considered have a really clean blackface type amp with a super simple pedalboard that included a Riot for distortion needs. Glad you found what you like.

I would really like to try an JP11, but I'm so in love with JP's Budokan tone, and that's ALL basswood. But who knows? Maybe I'll find a BFR JP I like in the the JPXI

As for the SS frets.... that's such a hard topic for me.

I have big hands and I grip the neck with a pretty strong grip. On top of that I like high action and I have a heavy right hand. The nickel frets sound smooth, and don't add any nuances to the sound. I actually cannot stand the little snappiness and ting SS frets add to the tone, but they last SO much longer. Dilemma!!! Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Steve I have been dying to checkout SS frets and from what I have heard you only hear that snap and ping unplugged, are you saying not so and can you tell me someone who is using them where I can hear.

Roubster, sorry for the minor hijack:

Before I made the switch to EBMM I was strictly an Ibby guy and for the major portion of my guitar playing life a Les Paul player. All my axes were fitted with SS frets. Sort of "industry standard" from what I knew. I didn't get into the technical aspects of guitar construction and electronics until I made the switch.

Anyways, it wasn't until I got my JP and my 25th did I experience nickel frets. First and foremost the feel of nickel was the first thing I noticed and the "snap", rather the lack thereof, so to speak. For me these undesireable "side tones" are not just a result of SS frets, but a culmination of many things. I started getting into this after watching an interview with Eric Johnson about small nuances that contribute to sounds that dilute the pure "string" resonance tone. Things mentioned were frets, plectum material, strength of attack, action height etc. I got interested in this sort of deal when doing some mixes in Pro Tools and I could hear some faint, albeit present, snappy "tings" when playing my LP.

I dunno, sometimes I think I'm crazy but it's there. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but the medium profile nickel frets seemed smoother than the jumbo SS I was using before. The way my fingers feel on the strings on attack felt different as well. Like I said, to my ears the sound is small. It's minor, but I'm just saying it's definitely there. This isn't something I read on the internet and suddenly decided that SS was a tone honking ting machine. It's just my preference from the years of my playing experience. I'm considering SS frets simply because, they last longer. It's a tough choice.

This is really just evidence of how certain criteria for what you like change over time. I mean, take a look at Petrucci himself. He had quite a lot of changes done over the years to his guitar, but he has the advantage of being JP and being able to get whatever he wants with EBMM. My style and preference for guitar has changed numerous times as well, and I am finding out the minute details of what works best for me and what does not. Really the bottom line is that I would have LOVED to keep the Silo Special, but as I mentioned I am not in the position to have a COLLECTION of guitars. I need two guitars that will cover as much ground as possible for what I like to play and hear. The Y2D definitely fits that bill and the Pro S3 as well.

As for the stainless steel frets, its really a matter of preference and its just another option. I personally did not hear the difference when plugged in at all. It does give it a snappy brighter attack unplugged, but I did not feel it brightened up the tone. I just really like the feel of them. Again, it's a matter of preference, and its awesome that we have so many choices and quality products to choose from. Its basically like someone saying "the AL is the best guitar in the world" and than another person saying "the JP is the best guitar ever". They are both amazing guitars meant for two different kinds of players. But then again there are people that can pull off many things on either one of them.

The Riot has been a lot of fun, but you definitely need a nice clean tone to start off with. Sounds really nice boosted with the BB Preamp as well...that's only for people that are addicted to gain though hehe. I'm looking into getting a Shiba Drive as well, since that has a bit more gain than the BB and is really smooth sounding. I've been really getting into fusion playing recently, and Guthrie Govan and Tom Quayle are responsible for my deviation as well as getting my interest in trying out something else. Before that I would not even look in a direction of any other guitar other than EBMM. But yes, overall they are still my favorite guitars and really love the innovation and quality behind every single one of the products.

Good one Rob, suhrs rock! At least I'm led to believe. Haven't found one that clicks with me yet. But I totally get the moving on bit. I've dropped all my silo specs today in favor of a custom made guitar, 100% hand built by a luthier in Redding, CA. Heck. I've dropped everything, not just the silos. But I still hang on to my jpx7, still a great guitar. Moving on is part of life. I still hold that the silo specs are fantastic guitars. Just that people change. I know I did.

Congratulations for finding and going for what you want!

Hey Lionel! That's pretty crazy that you unloaded all your Silo Specials. That's funny since I know you are/were a big fan of the Silo Special and so am I still. I will definitely get another down the road anyway. One of the factors that made me get the Suhr is actually the bigger body size, since I've been playing the Y2D a lot really got used to that and it feels much more comfortable for me to have a bigger body. I was actually quite taken back by the new JPXI, but again few things there that just dont work for me personally which is the 3 way toggle and the placement of the knobs. Still a fantastic guitar. If I had unlimited resources, I would have every single Ball in the line up! I can actually get along just fine with different neck profiles and body shapes, but again certain things work better for me to be my main players. And that's really what its about, is playing the guitars and not hoarding them and constantly selling and buying new stuff. Some people take pleasure in that, but I am all about playing these things which they are meant for. Ask Sal (Music Man) what condition the Silo Special was in after 4 years. Barely a mark, but the neck pretty much has a vintage tint after playing it so much hehe.

Suhr's are great guitars. I have two Pro Series, i too got them as replacements for the 14 silo specials ive had over the years. Just what I wanted. BUT the AL's cant be beat for what they do. Nothing wrong with PRs either too, i have a couple of them as well. EBMM, Suhr, PRS = A lot of time playing guitar!

Hey Lionel! That's pretty crazy that you unloaded all your Silo Specials. That's funny since I know you are/were a big fan of the Silo Special and so am I still.

I lied. I just remembered I still have ONE Silo Spec. :) The mightly Sequoia Gold LE08. That one is staying, because it's a gift to my firstborn who was born on 2008. (If he grows up and tells me he'd want to play a Les Paul first before this, I'd break his head with it...) It rarely gets any play, but I do jam with it once in a while and it reminds me of why I used to like Silo Specs so much. My 2nd boy gets the JPX7 which was made in 2010, the year he was born.

Thing is, I have become a FIRM believer in boutique custom-made guitars. Not the kind you'd buy from some really expensive boutique names, which are mainly upmarket off-the-shelf guitars really. I mean 100% hand built from scratch, you choose the woods, electronics, design, inlays finishes, scale length, neck size, nut width, neck profile, tuners, everything. It's built exactly to your specs, and becomes a guitar only you could play, because it's made only for you. There's some amazing gratification to be obtained from an instrument like that.

But once in a while, that LE08 does creep up on me most unsuspectingly. Heh...
