A few weeks back, I went in to slap a down payment on a natural Axis. One of the guys working there said that this crazy thing happened the other day. A fella walked right into the store, grabbed a JPXI right off the wall, ran out, car waiting and all. That's just crazy!! I dunno. I'm sure GC had the serial number records. I think they ended up changing the layout of the EB display to move high end stuff behind the counters.

Just thought that I'd share the story.

I hate people that steal instruments. But at least he stole it from GC that has insurance and not from a small place that would likely just lose the $2500 or even worse from a gigging musician. Still he should burn in the pits of hell.

The GC I frequent (Natick) has a guy at the door and a turn-style kind of thing. Couldn't happen there. You can tell times are tough and when times get tough, people get stupid.

we had a dude come into our office while I was gone at the dentist. He was wandering around for almost an hour, on his phone in a jump/track suit and Air Jordan's. Several people asked if they could help him, and he said he was just looking at the sprinkler/fire system, and they let him continue to wander. He took my Macbook Pro (company 'puter) and walked off.

Ballsy.

They have turnstyles?

Maybe I never noticed. I plan to stop in there shortly (like leave the office in a few minutes). Maybe I'll pay attention. (probably not).

It does suck. Since they stole if from a GC, that's all the more reason for them to eventually put the expensive guitars way up high or in a premium room where they can watch you or worst case.....stop allowing people to try them out without getting a copy of your driver's license (like most car dealers do). I can see that coming.

I do know a story from many, many years ago. A guy walked into a sears in Westfield Ma (it's been long since closed down....this was in the 70's) with a small can of gas. He walked up to the garden tractors, filled the tank, started it up, drove it out of the store and out to his trailer. Nobody even questioned whether he paid for the thing. He didn't.

Was it the Oxford Valley Guitar Center? If so that sucks, I was planning on going there soon, I was hoping they still had the JPXI...oh yeah and because stealing is wrong.

The GC in San Jose has turnstiles. All of the high end stuff is locked to the neck hanger, as well.

My Neighbor used to do that at home depot all the time, before they had security cameras in the store in north kingstown. He used to go in and buy something which I know he did a table saw , a chop saw and a nail gun or two. he would then go home go back an hour later with the receipt go in the store get the same item that he just bought go up to customer service and return it and they would give him his money back. They finally caught on and tried to get him but he ran out of the store and he got away.

Also a weird story my friend went into GC to buy a bass case for his P bass so they showed him with a P bass which case it would fit in so he told they guy he would take that case , well they must have started to talk about something else and someone closed the case and he paid for the case and put it in his basement and for some reason continued to use his gig bag. About 6 months later he went to use the case and when he opened it the pbass from GC was still in there. apparently no one checked it on the way out and he didnt know it was in there , not sure if he ever took it back or not though.

That sucks. When I was there I heard stories of thefts at other stores, but luckily nothing ever happened at my stores.
They'll send out a company wide email of the theft with the guitar particulars and the police will get the same info.
The stores will also make sure that there aren't any high value guitars near the exits.

This is why there is that 30 day waiting period on used gear to make sure that it wasn't stolen.

Hey its not funny....Guitar Center lets people play our stuff....but more and more they are getting stolen This shrinkage is not isolated...Sherman oaks has all of our stuff on the top shelf now and it isnt selling in that position so it hurts us.

I'm not laughing. I'm serious! Nothing funny about theft.

I work in retail and it always makes me smile when the theives get arrested, publicly humiliated, and/or both. But what really makes me angry is when people try stuff with their children around and never being able to accuse anyone sucks.

I have never had a retail job where shrinkage wasn't a HUGE issue. It is a sad reality that won't go away. I woked at a CD store and we'd find CD wrappers daily. I can't imagine seeing guitars disappear.

'Most cunning theft' award happened to a colleague of mine many years back.

He had left his jacket containing his wallet hanging inside a wardrobe in a meeting room in a hotel (silly in retrospect I know).

During a 20 minute coffee break, somebody must have gone into the room and taken ONE credit card from his wallet leaving the cash and everything else untouched. It was a card from the back of his wallet and one he didn't use regularly which is why he was sure he hadn't taken it out and lost it himself.

He didn't notice himself at all until the card company contacted him due to the huge spending on the card several days later (they were not as hot then as they are now at spotting unusual spending patterns).

After retracing his steps, the hotel did admit that they were aware of previous instances of this type of theft.

Very cunning!
