Hello cats, I just got back from the Deep Purple concert, and before I get to the details, I just want to mention that Mountain and April Wine, ROCKED!

OK the Deep Purple show was amazing, I was awe struck and of course seeing Steve perform his magic was unbelieveable...and seeing the Y2D used perhaps for over 80% of the show was also a real treat (I asked the people in front of me if I could use their binocculars just to confirm...man it is beautiful)...the highlight was a song I believe called Contact, an instrumental where Steve just floored us with his wizardry...man I...I...I really don't know what else to say...I'm pumped ;)

Awesome! Yeah, seeing Steve Morse live usually is a jaw-dropping experience. Glad you had a good time. :)

Raz,

the song you're talking about is 'Contact lost' from the Bananas album. One of the crew of the Columbia spaceship had two or three DP CD's with her on board of the spaceship. As you all now what happened and the DP guys were all in good contact with the Columbia crew, the day it happened, Steve came into the recording studio and played the very tune there and then in honour of the members of the Columbia spaceship. As Gillan stated: the things we wanted to say, but couldn't, were all combined in this tune of Steve. It's beautiful and indeed awesome. If you wanne now: it's the last song on the Bananas album.

Gr, Tom.

Thanks, the song brought a tear to my eye...not only for it's beautiful atmosphere, but also Steve's playing. Oh I forgot to mention, I don't think I've ever seen a guitar player, and I have seen a lot of shows, that smiles and enjoys playing as much as Steve...he had this school boy grin that was glued on...the cat's cool man!

I'm glad you enjoyed it Raz, but this is something that really bugs me about the Ottawa concert scene, and the reason why I refuse to go to concerts at the Corel Centre any more (last show I saw there was RUSH or Clapton, I can't remember which)... anyway, I haven't been to a show there that I really enjoyed, because I just don't see being seated in orderly rows with 15,000 of my closest friends no more than 800 feet from the stage as a pleasant musical experience, especially with the absolutely appalling acoustics they have in that place... basically, if I need to use binoculars to see who's up there and what they 're playing, I'm not interested, and as much as I'd like to see Steve play again, I won't go to see him there... Now if he came to the Congress Centre or Lansdowne Park or one of the festival gigs (Bluesfest? Why not, we had Sting and this year ZZ Top's coming) I'd be there in a flash!

Actually the show last night was more intimate then what I am used to (7000 fans I believe) and the acoustics were spot on!

I'm in Jimi's camp, those arena shows aren't as much fun in my 40's as they were in my teens.

Luckily, my musical tastes have changed (i.e. the masses don't care much for the music I like) so I get to see the musical talen I love from about 20 feet away with about 200 other people.

:D

And I've seen steve with around 5o people and 10 feet away.

I almost bought bananas just to hear contact lost. Would like to hear it one day. Still haven't.

Raz, I didn't make it to the show, I went last year. If I had know you were going though I might have bought a ticket and we could have hooked up for some beers and eats.

I saw them last year with Satriani and Thin Lizzy and about 6 months before that at Massey Hall. If they play Massey Hall again- make that show. You will likely run into Steve hanging out by the stage entrance.

I'm surprised nobody has commented on Steve's use of the Y2D at the show last night...

Now that you bring it up , you say he used it for 80% of the show? I thought BP said the original would still be his main ax.

Did you make out any discernible difference between the Y2D and the original model?

I didn't notice you said 80% of the show. When I saw the Dregs/SMB in January, he used the prototype for just 1 or 2 songs. His "#1" was definitely his main axe, maybe in part because his synth-thing was hooked up to it.

I don't follow, are you asking me whether or not I am sure I saw what I saw...well first off the guitar he played for what I consider most of the show had cream coloured pups, and the configuration was unlike his original model (missing a single). Secondly no pickguard, well ok we know there is one but you know what I mean. Third, from the back of the guitar, sort of at an angle where I could see the rear, I could see the black back, and the binding. Finally like I said I borrowed binnocculars and I spyed the Y2D...now unless someone from Steve's camp says otherwise, I am convinced it was the Y2D (and no I wasn't puffing the Magic Dragon)! I mean I wish someone would either say dude you're f#&*'d or yeah you alright bro, cause if you would have seen me at the show I was like a kid in a candy store..."Steve's playing the Y2D, Steve's playing the Y2D..."

i feel ya there dude ... sorry dont mean to derail the thread.

but ever since i got into punk rock ive felt lucky that i could see one of my favorite bands for $7 with only about 200- 300 other people; maybe less. hell some shows you ever get to sit on the damn stage.

ive stopped going to those 2million person venues days ago ... unless Green Day's playing :)

Hey Raz, I'm sure you're right. BP mentioned somewhere that Steve said that he was probably going to use the Y2D for the entire DP shows (because he doesn't need the 4th PU there and things like that). Great, would love to be there, but I'll have to wait for September to see the guys in Germany.

Keep us informed, I, for one, read almost all the posts but don't always have time to reply to them... :p

Cheers, Tom.

Hey Raz, no not asking if you are sure what you saw, I am sure you are right!

I am just wondering if the Y2D is now Steve's main ax (which I guess you really can't answer) and how it sounds compared to the original.

Hookbro sorry if I sounded all snotty, it was late and I was tired, I just wasn't sure if you meant his original, or the prototype Y2D...
As far as sounding the same, that's difficult cause for the most part he's playing power chords then solos mostly on the neck pup...It would probably be easier to tell with him doing his solo stuff, and I would love to volunteer my ears for such a task...I need to see Steve live, he is electrifying both in his playing and personality!
