Hi,

Just ordered my first Music Man. I've been wanting one of these for years and knew my next bass purchased would be my dream bass. On this basis, I went for the following:

Stingray 5 HS 3-eq,
Black body,
Black headstock,
Black Perloid pickguard
Maple Neck

Only one problem - 20 week delivery!!!!!!

It was up against a couple of 5 string Lakland basses. The Laklands seem to have a flatter finger board making it tricky to see from above where the Stringray has a better curve. Tonally the Stringray had that middle eq edge - which was the final decision maker.

This is not intended to put down Lakland BUT if you're thinking of buying a Lakland and you don't own a Music Man, go play one - you might just think again...

Roll on October!!!

I have played several laklands and you are right. They are flat and not much fun to play. You will enjoy your musicman more than you can imagine! The wait will be worth it.

Up until about 8 years ago I was torn between Lakland, Warwick and Music Man. Then I went to a concert that had three bands that played through the same equipment, amps and had the same sound people. The bass player in the first band played a Warwick, the next bass player played a Lakland and the third a Singray 5. They all seemed to be capable players who knew what they were doing.

The Stingray just blew the frets off the other basses. The Warwick and Lakland had a more refined boutique type of sound but the Stingray sounded deeper, thicker, punchier, more aggresive and it cut right through the mix.

I was already leaning toward the Stingray, this experience pushed me over the edge. It would be another eight years before I could afford to buy a Stingray. During those eight years I kept re-evaluating what my dream bass is, but I found that I was comparing everything to that Stingray sound. That was the sound I wanted, so that was the bass I finally bought.

Congrats on your purchase! I think you made the right choice.

How long do you think you will have the Stingray until we corrupt you and you have to get a Bongo too? I put the over under at 6 months.

Don't worry, the 20 weeks wait will be forgotten when you will hit your first note on your SR5! :D

Agreed. It will probably feel like 20 years while you're waiting, but once you put your hands on it and start playing it will all be worth it, especially since you're getting it configured EXACTLY the way you want it.

You'll post pictures, right? ;)

I had a simular experience as Sting. I ve had many many basses except a
Ernie Ball, I was a huge Fender fan, so i would buy basses and end up selling them over the years. About 10 years ago i went to a place with some friends
and when the band started playing i heard the bassist and thought Wow, sounds amazing, so i worked my way up to see what he was playing and what do you know, a EB Musicman SR.
Then again about 8 years ago my girl and i stopped to have something to eat
at this B&G ,we were about to leave and the owner said you gotta stay and
see this band, the bassist is from a well known artist and they start soon.
So we hung out and the band came walking through the owner introduced us to them, the bassist and i strated talking he told me he played MM basses, i told him i was a big Fender fan. Anyways he pulls out a Musicman SR5, they started up, and Wow again his sound was truly amazing, and his setup was not complex.
So i finally came to my sinses i had to get one of these basses.
Now that i have my Srerling, to me it's the best bass for the money and the sound, well you'll see.Your gonna love that SR.
Congrats and welcome to the EB family!

That's awesome. I just played a SR5HH the other day. Even with high action(it had obviously been at the store for awhile) it still sounded great!

new owner, appreciate comments

Really interesting reading your comments. I owned a Stringray 5 several years ago, then got the boutique fever and have had Modulus, a Thumb 5 neck thru and a Warwick Katana neck thru from the custom shop. I have to say to the money I never felt like I got what I expected from the Warwicks. I played a Stingray HH 5 at my local guitar center and was impressed, decided after reading the specs to try a Sterling 5 HH- ordered monday, supposed to be here friday. Egyptian smoke with maple fingerboard, I am really excited to get my hands on it. By the way, GC had a 25% discount last month! I thought it was a deal!
